So, I have started to do a little research in the quest for TVR ownership and obviously one of the questions which always pops up is what is the chassis like. A mate has recently visited this one pictured below at a garage in Preston and I can see that things arent good. But the question is how bad is this? I really need to get a feel for what is good, poor, run away......fast. This to me looks a bit too far gone for a clean up and repaint and looks like it will need some fairly serious money spent on it. What are you thoughts?

Anyone going to the lancs meet this wednesday so I can at least pretend I am not billy no mates? smile

That looks solid, but also unloved. Unfortunately the areas to worry about are not shown here, the chassis corners where the two post lift supports are positioned are the areas you need to check. The tops of the tubes running along the sills are where corrosion problems are most prevalent.

Ahhh OK, yep makes sense. So I presume you can feel the tops of the tubes that run along the sill?

Forgot to add these

Normally too tight to feel apart from just by the front and rear arches, where you can normally get a finger in

If it didn't collapse when they picked it up on that corner lift it can't be too bad wink

That looks like lots of work.. like a body lift to me, unless you are prepared to rub that down by hand and that will take days and days if not weeks and is difficult with engine in place. My Chassis is a late one so in areas it was quite bad but nothing like as bad as that! I don't thing I'd have attempted it with that car.
The main issue must be the tubes running under the car along the cill, if there rotten you've got to lift or partial lift the body anyway.
As soon as you remove wishbones etc you'll want to replace bushes, ball joints etc so price it up first.
Check my thread out " What's this I see"
There's some pictures of the chassis before I re painted, it still took many hours to tidy it up and it's still not that great!
The things I've replaced or re conditioned are a base essential if you've gone that far but that's just my opinion.
Goodluck and check out as many cars as possible.

Looks pretty solid really, a good pressure clean, flat back and repaint and it'll be fine. Outriggers look far better than mine on the underside anyway.
