Dave, Mac and any other high power boys, what clutch are you running?

I have some more investigating to do on my clonk - see a previous post. There was loads of play in the CVs which was my first suspect (now replaced) - My CV boot was also torn. However, the clonk is still there although seems to be improved slightly.

The clutch seems to clonk with operation. I am dubious that this is the reason for my driving clonk (serious can't drive past 30mph - think the propshaft is going to fly into my legs type clonk) but I was never that happy with it and as I am going to pull the drive chain to bits and check it all out anyway I thought I would throw one in and get the flywheel skimmed.

Assuming it is not the diff, or clutch I am left with the possibility of a seriously collapsed wheel bearing (derr should of checked this when the car was in the air)..

Whatever it is when I got the car off the transporter it blocked the car from moving, only going backwards when I applied some engine force in reverse, hence my original guess at diff, which of course it still could/may well be although I could not detect much play in it.

Oh well, need to sort the wheel bearing on the Mrs's Cayenne before I can get it on the ramp.

Any thoughts?

Matt

Sounds like the diff!

I run a Mcleod twin plate clutch, no issues and not as heavy as a previous Helix!

Yeah I know Phazed - and worst case from a £ perspective. When I found the torn gator and the loads of movement in the CVs I thought I had found the culprit, especially as I could not detect any more than normal play in the diff.

That will teach me for jumping to the easy solution..

Matt, remember the noise that was in my car when we drove it and I thought the diff was shot?

It wasnt it was just a wheel bearing I had no idea a wheel bearing could be that noisy it was ridiculous. I only noticed when I got underneath there was some serious play. It had got so hot it had knackered the CV too literally welded to the shaft had to cut it off. Replaced both and now fine.

Clutch wise be carful I got stung once before..I would say spend the extra now and go Mcleod twin plate. You may find the paddle clutch has created a lip on the flywheel now so a wise move for a quick skim.

Yes Neal, you told me about the wheel bearing, otherwise I would not even have through of it smile

Here's hoping...

Anyone have a good source/contact for the Mcleod clutch?

Cheers,

Matt

Mcleod twin plate, don't even think of anything else. Tried helix far too stiff and grabby absolute pig in traffic.

I also got stung. The paddle clutch tore into my flywheel badly. I refitted my old JE plate and AP racing pressure plate and it's been brilliant. I am astounded it's lasted with so much abuse. I will also be putting a twin plate in when the time comes.

Hi Matt,
I also fitted a JE clutch and pressure plate, it stood up to nitrous and is coping with the turbo, very light action too.

Welll, good news is diff wheel bearings etc all fine.

Bad news is the clonk wants to escape from gearbox. Related to final drive -speed related - happens in every gear. Seems to be located atthe mid point of the box.

Car drives just makes a godawfull racket.

Bloody broaddband is down so will have to do some research/make some calls tomorrow (I know there is loads of stuff on here), however any suggestions gratefully received. One thing is for sure itwon't go back standard.

Cheers,

Matt

Mounts are fine. Rear prop uj definitely fine. Chance it could be front prop UJ but I did check it previously and there was no play. Standing underneath car with wheels in air in gear ticking over it certainly appears to be gearbox frown. Got to put the cats back on the Cerb b4 I start undoing stuff.

Phoned JE yesterday and they are out of clutches and apparently AP are not making any more.....
So what are the alternatives, which Mcleod clutch is the correct one for a Chimaera, does anyone know?
