Speedo wiring/dismantling info?
Discussion
Hi All,
When i was driving my Chim home for 1st time it got stuck at 39999, done bit of research and looks like its a fairly common problem?
I needed to replace the Meta sounder as the original wasnt working and looking at service history had been dead for a while, found a company that does a replacement but need to fit a modified cable between original sounder cable and alarm unit under dash top so after doing this thought would have a go at the speedo at same time.
Idealy wanted to remove dash top but drivers side bolt is about 30mm long (15mm would have been ample!) and wasnt going to let me remove top without serious risk to dash venier (its not purfect but it'll do for now)so cable tied dash top up from visor and managed to get speedo out.
Has 3 wires to it , black (ground) green (speedo sensor shown as green on poor diagram i have in 1st edition of bible that came with car so assume this is pulsed 12v input to drive the speedo?)
Yellow (dont know what this is unless oddometer has seperate feed?)
As the speedo is working fine but oddo not its either stuck or if does get seperate feed on yellow wire - where from?
I tried to open up the speedo to hopefully move on the digits but just couldnt get in to it! un doing the 3 nuts holding the wires loosened it and could see/feel it moving inside plastic but must be held by something else, tried gently prising it around edge but just not having it at all.
Anyone know secret to getting it open?
Alarm sounder now working fine but oddo anoyingly refusing to move on ( i tried "tapping it" whilst was out and the digits moved slightly so now reads 40000 more than 39999 but when took for spin it still didnt move on.
Have read about reversing to clear it but surly just gets a 12v pulse from sensor so wont make any difference will it?
Peter.

The metal casing & black plastic back are bolted together, the only way to get in is to gently prize back the front aluminium bezel from the steel body. Looks a bit drastic when you do it but as long as you only prize it back enough to separate the two it goes back OK.
Once you have removed the bezel the front glass and inner bezel come away then remove the three connecting wires and the whole of the speedo internals will come out.
The three wires go to an electronic circuit board, this feeds the speedo and also a small stepper motor that turns the mileometer via a wormscrew.
I have some photos somewhere I will try and dig them out.
