I eventually got my prop and new UJ's back yesterday evening, so I thought I'd degrease the chassis and give it a liberal coat of enamel paint before replacing the prop and exhaust. The centre beams of the chassis are cleaning up fairly easily, but I started to scrape away at the out rotters and now it threatens to turn into a mammoth job. If I need to paint the underside of the rotters, I need to remove all the waxoil. I've got half of one side of the rotters back to the metal today (feels like and endless task), depressed myself and made a mess of the drive. I'm beginning to think that I'm wasting my time, so what do I do?

1. Give up on driving this summer, lift the body and do the chassis properly
2. Patch it up what I've scraped back on the rotters, drive it for the summer and then do the chassis in October/ November
3. Remove the rest of the waxoil, paint the rotters and then do the body off in winter
4. Sell it and blow the money on a weekend to remember in Amsterdam

5. Drive it through the summer while building up a fund to pay someone else to do a proper body off in the winter.

It's a big task, I'd only do it if time is of no relevance, expect to be there awhile!
If you haven't seen my thread on What's this I see!
Have a look I've done the front end on the drive!
I thought I'd be a few wks, nearly 3 months later but boy is it worth it.
Carry on doing it but be very very patient, that's what I'd do, depends on how bad the rotters are!

That would likely be next year's holiday money Dave! It has gotta be cheaper to do it myself...

You've changed your name Alun! I don't want to be there three months TBH. Summer will be over then and I may as well lift the body now in that case, have it blasted and do it properly.

If its not a few days work, then prob best to cover in wax oil, and drive it thro the summer. You really need to check that its all sound and just surface rust. If so then come winter do a small body lift and sort it your self.

Changed name yes mate!

I'd maybe get the money in the bank then do a body lift and re furb all in one.

I've literally just got back from a good long test drive in torrential rain, went for miles!

My car wasn't bad but the difference in feel by replacing things that I could have left alone has been the reason why it's all worth the effort. The car feels brand new.

If I lifted the body off I'm sure I'd have to replace every bush, cable, and some.

I think if you do a good job the car will be better than when new.

As I've done mine for a few hundred quid, parts cost more, it seems money well spent.

The time and effort involved is another thing but that's just down to getting stuck in every chance you get. It's over with in less time and the car performs better and your on the road before you've thought about it much.

I've enjoyed it like building a model, it is what it is and takes whatever it takes to complete it. My mind was open and accepted the reality.
Work work work.
Do it right and you've saved upwards of 8 k on someone else doing it!
Big job, need major tools and mega garage in my eyes!
I'd see what them riggers are saying!

Okay, sounds like a clear..."recover in Waxoil and do a full job in winter" response! I'll just paint the main beams as they're easy and then and Waxoil the outriggers!

Best bet.

Use it through the summer and when there are less driving days/events/meets etc in winter, take it apart if you think it needs doing.
