Chimaera for 8k?
Discussion
I've done a little bit of digging around about issues and so on but struggling a little to understand if it's possible to buy a solid Chimaera for around 8k? By that I mean that it's arse isn't going to fall off half way down the road and so on. I appreciate it's towards the cheaper end of TVR ownership but I can't really stretch to the high teens that some go for. If I'm on a hiding to nothing at 8k I'll step away but just wondering if it is indeed possible. Cheers chaps.
It's perfectly possible to buy a good one privately, maybe off someone on PH. Time of year makes a big difference to prices too, with the cars fetching less from the end of the driving season, ie October onwards. I was getting quite upset at how little good cars were making 4-6 months ago.
They do come up for that sort of money, I`ve got a beaut` for 8K. It had a full chassis restoration by Willow sports cars, new suspension and brakes, new carbon fibre hood, new rear hood with the narrower screen. It`s got a couple of stone chips but that can easily be sorted. The interior is very good, and the veneer dash is also new. I got it from Lymington from a garage and jumped at it. Keep looking, I`m sure there is a car out there.
There are several for sale in the classifieds on here that may be OK, some for a bit less than that, but obviously a good check is necessary. Most people still seem to prefer buying from a dealer and paying for the privilege.
Apart from the chassis, there's not a lot to go wrong that isn't obvious (noisy engine, saggy suspension, poor paint, failed electric parts and so on) compared to cars with ABS, EBD, airbags, traction control, active suspension, electronic diffs etc.
And there's no guarantee that the dealers aren't selling you a car with hidden chassis problems as some forum users on here can testify to!

There are currently 14 on classifieds at under 8k, and then you can look a little higher as many sellers will negotiate

What you are looking for is regular servicing, condition, and the state of the outriggers to start with

If you are going to do under 5000 miles or so a year you coud try a classic policy. They generally don't require you to have a spare no claims.
Some of the mainstream insurers may give you a good quote.
