Hi Im just in the process of putting things back together and came across a problem, I intended to fit a set of Powerflex bushes to the diff but the 2 bushes that fit in the front carriers are too wide. Powerflex only list one part number for the front diff mounts PFR79-110. iS IT BECAUSE i HAVE A gkn Diff. Has anyone had the same problem ?

I replace mine on my last chimaera without issue and that was a 96, I bought a full set from Clever Trevor and have just looked on their website and noticed that the diff bushes are not suitable for early models,

I can't see an alternative but it may be worth giving them a call

Cheers Ive just lurked on the Griffith forum and found out that it looks like there are different sizes. The GKN diff ones being smaller.
Oh well stick em on a well known auction site then and get some standard rubbery ones.

Good bit of info as my car is a 96 and I think I would have had the same problem as I was going to use those bushes!

I have an early GKN. `92 Griff. At the time of refitting i wasnt aware you could get the shorter polly bushes to suit. I just cut the pollys i had bought in half removing the appropriate amount of material from the middle so they fitted in the brackets nicely and then pressed them into the diff brackets. They havent budged. The normal pollys are also slightly wider in diameter than the ones acyually needed which means they are a real tight fit in the bracket which i suppose has helped stop them moving. The ends of the bushes also but up to the chassis so they cant really go anywhere anyway.

I think it is David Gerald who stocks the correct size Powerflex bushes. Worth a phone call.

Think i've got a problem......I got Powerflex PFR79-112 and they seem to be to big for the top rear bracket? Any one else had this problem? Starting to tear my hair out now with this.

No, the normal size ones, were the correct fit for my top chassis mount.

If your having problems give Powerflex a ring direct with your measurements. I did this and they dealt with me no problem and were very helpful.

I finally got my diff in yesterday and as per my original post the front bushes were too wide, I did what several people advised including a Sheffield based TVR garage and measured and cut 8mm from the centre of the bush, I also shortened the metal insert. All works and is a tight fit, but what a pain of a job to get everything lined up and bolts in.

Yep, that's exactly what I did and as I say they haven't budged. As well as too long they are also slightly too wide diameter wise iirc. This extra tight fit has obviously help keep them in place.

Yes its a lovely job. Bad enough when the body is off never mind body on. thumbup

I've been a plonker......didn't realise there was a metal sleeve left in the bracket!

I didnt think the BTR and GKN rear bushes were different. Just the fronts as I had a rear set for the BTR and it fitted my GKN.
Good news then.

They are all the same OD. & ID (sleeve defined)... but on YOUR car the bushes float with nothing to stop them working out of the bracket or the bushing moving out of the sleeve along the chassis ~ later cars encapsulate the whole bush. Thats fine with metalastic where the assembly is bonded so the inner sleeve (trapped by chassis) keeps the rubber & bracket all held together.

If next time you want to service your diff... I have made the special tool you need to 'part' the case enough to get the C&P out, you wouldn't have needed that to get the drive shafts out. Since you sent it away I can only assume that you had problems removing them? Basic removal procedure OTOMH, pop out the circlips, unbolt the bearing caps under the cover, then insert set screws to pull out the drive shaft by driving them against the casing (shim it with some metal plates to protect the case and it will wind them out straight).
