Headlights bulbs or whole unit
Discussion
Ok this may sound stupid , one of my headlights dip or full beam does not work, is it a simple step of replacing a bulb from behind the unit getting access thru the grill mesh, or is it taking the whole unit out from the front, I hope its not the latter as I have the Steve Heath mod,I cant look at the moment as Im away, any info is appreciated,,,
If you have a Mk1 you need to remove the front grill and you can then access the H4 bulb holder from behind, it has two clips holding the bulb in place that you pinch to release. On later cars I think you have a hatch in the wheel arch to gain access to the back of the reflector where the bulb removal is as above.
Fog has got it in one.
The access hatch makes the job easy on later cars (10 mins each side, including taking te wheel off if, like me, you like even easier access). The bulb is held in by a hinged spring clip top and bottom. Push to release, fiddle it around the wires, and out comes the bulb and connector.
But buy the right bulbs and change both. Stay with 60/55 watt, but go fo a pair of double brightness ones, like Osram Nightbreakers. Plenty to choose from, pack will say "80% brighter" or "120% brighter". Claims are true.

Doing it through the front grill is not that difficult, when I had my Chim I put HID's in through the grill, did end up taking them back out and putting in nightbreakers due to not being able to get the beam pattern correct. For the amount of times you need access I would have thought cutting panels is a lot of work.
