Ok, so I have done some road miles and a track day on the above.

On the road - inspiring levels of grip in the dry, good grip in the wet, even heavy rain. At no time did I think I would be in trouble.

On the track - inspiring levels of grip, on a par with Toyo R888s. When you reach the limit on the Toyos, you get a loud squeal (and from the tyres too!) and then they let go. With the Federals they seem more progressive. You get lower pitched tyre noise over a wider range of grip, but they kept on gripping.

I was really on the pace all day at Cadwell Park today (overtook two Cerberas several times each) and only had two small slides on tight turns. Braking grip superb. No spins.

Price - here's the rub. Toyos £ 650-750 a set, depending on size. Federals £300-450 a set, ditto.

Beware, there is more than one type of Federal 595. You want the RS-Rs.

Wear - not a long enough test to tell. They marbled up just like 888s do on the edges of the grooves, and the tread depth seemed the same at the end of the day as at the beginning, but I need a few more Trackdays to give a better opinion.

That's great to hear you had such a good day Anthony, over taking on a track day means little but driving well matters a lot, well done sir.

That's the same tyres the Mazda races on, same weight of car too.
My mate was looking like they had ef all grip but that's another story.

Anthony get a set shaved? Hahahah
Takes most of the rubber off until the grooves are very low, the tyre moves around a lot when new!
They are then at the point where they offer the best grip, you'd set a time then I tell ya, lol.

We're the tyres brand new for today, other than the travel miles?

Could you post a pic of the two tyres that did the most work please, I'm trying to assess something, I felt my old mate couldn't get them upto temp on a warn day, not enough wear for my liking!
My real question is did you develope many marbles and strips of rubber coming away from the tyre, most prevellent by the edges of the tread pattern.
As I said your seeing the blocks move more when there new.

If your shattered and can't be arsed, another day mate. Weldone for today your flying the flag for all of us dreamer racers.

They had been scrubbed in by a couple of hundred miles gentle travel to and from car shows and so on, no loss of tread depth. And one visit to Curborough sprinttrack. I was well impressed.

I could well be wrong so observe judgement but I'm under the impression their a bit less grippy in the wet and very slightly harder than the toyo's, last longer.

The Mazda seems to sit up on the tyre, looks very light.
Running 26 psi all round at cold, 30/31 in lap.
Tyre temps with a fair degree of front camber
36 inoside edge
31/32 middle
30 outside edge.
For a reference!
The tyre looked like it wasn't working on the outside edge and that shows it
Driver try harder,l easier Said than done.

So did everyone go home safe

Some nutter in a silver Chimaera did not listen when attended the induction . When i went in to a safe position ready over took him, instead of moving to the right he went to the left and boxed me in at over 100 mph .. He is a a twcensoredt and i will tell him to his face .

Why didn`t he listen especially when it comes to safety .confused forget to say he did it twice and nearly pushed be on to the grass .furious

They probably didn't know where to be on track!
Some people get it and some take longer or just don't get it.

I want an empty track with no one around me for miles if I'm in my road car, Marham. Scooby lost the back end at about 80mph right in front of me, big old tank slapper and I'm thinking which way is this tosser going to fully loose it, thank fk he went the other way to me.
Once I'd recovered my heart I was pumped, came in the pits with my arm hanging out the window smoking a fag, hahahahahah, joking obviously, fire hazard don't ya know.
That prat stayed well away from me after that, he was insenced that the Chim was faster than his Scooby.
I was amazed. What a car I've got to get on track.

That's an excellent point Alun, we couldn't have passed the Cerbs without them being gentlemen and having a little lift for us, which is good trackday etiquette and good driving for being alert and using the mirrors. I am not surprised though as over the years manners at the TVRCC days have been pretty much impeccable.

I suspect Daz's little problem was maybe a first timer getting in a bit of a panic while trying to get to grips with the track.

As for the Federals they seemed to work pretty well, I noticed Daz looking pretty damn quick later in the day and QBee was running similar pace to me on my R888's.

Glad that those who made it had a good day out at Cadwell, still not quite ready for a track day (mapping etc, etc.)Hope it was relatively well supported, the weather should have helped (well it was dry in my neck of the woods). Looks like the Federals give a better compromise if wearing slightly better than the 888's so they might be on my shopping list after mapping & chassis / suspension set up. Beginning to feel happier now I'm getting a few miles under my belt - approx. 275 miles since midday Sunday so far, fingers crossed that niggles are disappearing now. Have tried Jools several time on mobile but no joy yet !

That's very interesting Andy. Your all on it then.
The federals the Mazda runs are mullered very quickly.
I'll have to check there exact compound, they might also run a higher side wall but I'd need to check the sizes!

They might be a good compromise if you track and do high road mileage.

That's great to hear Richard, keep up the good work sir.

Daz, when you looked into my car, did you notice something that's not in your car?
No, not a better driver hehe, something attached to the car.

Ask your son, it's the cure for that "white knuckled hanging onto the steering wheel for grim death and bracing yourself against the door and the transmission tunnel" style of driving.

By the way, your son's analysis was that Dad was as fast as me (such a lovely lad!), but that there was a lot less drama, seat of the pants stuff, swearing and hanging on for dear life going on in my car.

We will definitely do a Cadwell evening together - that will show us both what we need to know. There's one on Thursday 26th June is you can make that date. 69 quid. Need to be there by 5.00 latest for the briefing. 4.30 would be better.

Sorry Alun, missed this post (fell asleep shortly after my 8.33 post). I will take pics tonight of the left hand tyres, as Cadwell is right handed. The tread groove edges looked just like they do on 888s, ie with a bead of rubber looking like it is about to fall off, and a few loose marbles ready to go.

Your mate must be mistaken. I got loads of heat into them, even more than the 888s, and they were really hot to the touch when coming back to the pits. Or was taught to drive by his granny.

Anyhoo, they get warm in half a lap, like the 888s, and really keep hot and don't fade. I was truly amazed how good they were as a track tyre, especially for a novice like me, as they gave me so much useful feedeback.

Wear gloves, your avin a laugh Daz. I can't drive without gloves on track, it's something psychological and I get a better grip of the wheel so my hands can relax.
It amazes me you guys drive in jeans and short sleeved shirts and some shoes.
Does anyone wear a suit that's designed for the job, like the fact you can be pulled up and out of the car by them and some fire protection.
How come you can fly around a race track like that but if your racing you have to wear the lot!

I'd rather wear the lot and feel much safer( happier)
It only takes a tyre on the grass and the next thing flying glass, often fire, let alone your legs crushed and upside down.
Reality and I've seen it many many times.

Snetterton two wks ago a simple off by a Porsche driver, smacked the barrier, shattered both side windows, bent the roof line, it was fked.

The fact you are trying to push the limit is a recipe for something.
Depends what you call quick I suppose.
If your not on the limit everywhere your to slow! Any coasting into turns and your miles off proper pace.
I will be the latter as it's a road car and happy to come home in one piece.
Anyone really hammering into turns has my utmost respect, that's where you can't get it wrong the most.
Brave boys with big pockets can do it no bother but as soon as you put reservations at the top of your mind, it's over and you'll brake earlier.
Driver speed is based on a number of reasons. Common sence is not usually one of them so introducing that has a slowing effect, well it has for me,,,,,,,,,,,, for about a lap anyway, lol.
Red mist, some punk and I'm raging like the car, hahahah
It's why I stay away!

17 inch all round, 215/40 on the front, 215/45 on the arse. I will post a pic when I am on the right computer.

As Daz has pointed out previously, the 215/45 Falderals are as wide as his (and my) 235/45 road tyres.

Alun, mate,

either

next time you fancy a sunny drive out, get y'ass in gear over to mine (I am a lot nearer to you now i have moved to Newark, straight up the M69/A46, 60 miles all dual carnageway from where the M69 and M6 join) and we will swap my wheels and tyres onto your car, and you can go give it some beans to see what you think of them. driving

Or

come to Curborough on Thursday 19th June and try them on the sprint track on my car. We've got quite a few TVRs there that day again. Or if you can't make that, I could drop by yours after the day finishes - you can't be that far from Curborough.

glad your getting to grips with the feds Anthony, mine seem to get better with age.

I love mine, had them for a couple of years now and seem great both on track and road. In heavy rain on track I can drive as fast as possible without spinning, BUT if I try and get the back end out, there is no way of catching it, however this is probably more down to the car than the tyres.

For the money I really don't think you can go wrong, very progressive, dont snap on the limit, wear well, grip well, what more do you want? wouldn't be surprised if they eventually go up in price, don't forget Yoko's use to be quite cheap when they were not very well known.

Should have kept me gob computer shut type

The track day was a proper test of them, as i went through a mini monsoon getting there and did about 130 miles at full tilt on track.

They were just as you describe, Rib, other than I did get the rear out of shape a couple of times by throwing it into tight off camber bends a bit too eagerly, but caught it easily and without arm fulls of lock. I will not be bringing the 888s to the next sprint.....
