I appear to having venting problems with my fuel tank . Having checked the pipe at the front that is clear. So I wondered if I just vented the tank cutting out the Canister it would solve the problem.

What does it actually do?

Is it needed?

I have venting problems even with the canister gone .. The pipe comes from the tank through a roll over (one way valve) then to a small K&N air filter (breather). could someone explain what is happening ?

It's a Houston. It's involved in (e)mission control, I believe.

It's there to keep emissions down to acceptable levels, so is irrelevant if your car is de-moggified. Just vent the pipe down outside the body. I think you might need a one way valve in the system. My carbon canister was dumped when the space was needed for my clutch servo.

Do you smell any fumes around the car at all Anthony.
I like the sound of getting rid of it, I'd forgot you'd had it removed. No issues then?

No smells ,if its connected to the roll over valve it must only allow air inwards if the roll over valve allows it .

Total confused !

The valve allows air to flow in and out of it when the car is on its wheels. It only shuts when the car is upside down.

The Carbon Canister is as essential as the Dilithium Crystals in containing the annihilation reaction of matter and antimatter to achieve warp speeds.

Next to the petrol tank ,its a valve which closers off if the car rolls ,that`s if the petrol cap is tight .

Why did i get issing from the petrol cap ?

This explains how it works Alun

I've taken mine out Daz, I have a breather in the rear arch. The rollover valve is that old they probably wouldn't work anyway. Besides if your upside down in a chimaera you have more things to worry about

I had the same problem as Daz, I took out the carbon canister as the electronic valve had failed, but the tank still created a vacuum and a very loud hiss every time the filler was removed. I could not understand why since it was venting to air.. I had removed the tank some months earlier to check the internal filter and to replace all the rubber fuel pipes, I left the roll-over valve upside down for some days, then fitted everything back, since that day I had a vacuum in the tank..

Before I left for the UK I decided to track the problem down, I found that the ball in the roll-over valve had stuck to the top of the unit, this was stopping any air from entering the tank, I checked by removing the valve attaching a piece of fuel pipe to the bottom and tryed to pass some air, nothing came out of the top confirming no air was entering the tank, I decided to put an air line on the top of the unit and give it a shot to release the ball, then passing a very low air pressure I could feel air coming out of the top connection, so far the tank is venting correctly and no more vacuum, but I do intend replacing the roll-over valve with an aftermarket part, age is on its side plus the fuel may have degraded the insides. As sapper said if you roll a chimaera the valve is the last thing going through your mind..

I did get some fumes when the pump first primes up, I connected a one way ball valve, stopping air from coming out, but allowing air in, so now when the pump primes the air movement is contained in the tank, but as fuel is removed the valve allows air in, no more smells.. It may stop evaporation since all I have done is replace the electronic switch with a mechanical one, but I do not know.

Thanks for the help ,i will have a look tomorrow. I have one of those one way valves but did not want to use it (only another thing to go wrong)

Chimongas bought an after market one .

I've now run a new venting pipe from the tank out just behind the nearside rear wheel arch and blocked the original one off, so will try that. When I first fitted the pipe there was a definite smell of people fumes but this soon disappeared. Fingers crossed this cures the venting problem.
