seriously though mate, coming from an Elan, whatever you get, just take it easy until you get to learn the car. In this cold weather its easy to give just a touch too much throttle and its big sideways moments. Sorry to sound like your dad...

Driving a Chimeara with or without power steering is a personal thing. Personally I prefer it with PAS
One thing that you must also consider however is the eventual resale of the car at some date in the future. Lack of PAS will put some buyers off buying your car.
As mentioned above, its down to personal preference.
My brother has a chim with PAS and i have non PAS on mine.
It seems having driven both on the same local twisty test routes the non PAS wins everytime. The PAS feels over assited and very twitchy at speed and doesn't inspire much confidence (for both my brother and i anyway). The non PAS has, for me, much more 'feel' and communicates well with the driver and informs steering inputs at speeds above crawling. Its just feels raw and connected. However, for urban driving, parking, saving the backend, looking cool negotiating your way out of a pub carpark PAS on the Chim is a god send.......

Horses for courses. No right or wrong, drive both, see what your preference is - you may like them equally as I did - which means you can concentrate on getting the best car in your price bracket without having to check if its PAS or not.
Incidentally, I cannot stand the PAS on my everyday hack. With 200 bhp and FWD it makes the car very twitchy under hard acceleration and the lightness of it means the car seems to dart one way and then another.
