Should there be play in the distributor cap once it is clipped in to position ? I,m just swapping out my alternator and checked the HT leads at the cap to make sure I had not disturbed them. At this point I noticed I could quite easily rotate the distributor cap a few mm in either direction. I checked the fit and clips but it still happens. I swapped the cap for an old one I had and this did the same thing. Is this normal to have a few mm rotation on the cap ? could there be a seal missing between the cap and distributor body ?

To my knowledge TADTS. I would use up the available play in a ccw direction for a bit of extra advance timing, and maybe firm it up with a zip tie.

Its perfectly normal for a few mm play. Moving the cap in this manner wont alter the timing. You have to move the body of the dizzy to alter the timing as its the internals of the dizzy that trigger when the spark sets off. As long as the cap is in roughly the right position, hence you can have some play, the spark will find its way to the correct plug.
