rear wheel bearing?

The rear n/s started to 'brake' on its own, when jacked up, the wheel was loose so it must be the wheel bearing. my question is, is there any other damage, is the cv joint ok. there is a big splinded bit, see photo, is the spline/bigger splined bit doing any thing? how can I check the cv joint?

The larger splined bit holds the wheel bearings in line and seals them on its inside edge, the smaller splined bit bolts onto the CV joint and the other end has the bolt that clamps it all together. If you need photos let me know as Im just about to put my fully refurbished hub back together in the next couple of days.

so am I ok to ignore that large diameter spline, fit a new bearing in the chunk that I have taken off, and everything will be ok?

Yep, CV joint will be unaffected, clean it all up just make sure the inner & outer bearing races are a snub fit on the hub carrier & the flange stub these often get damaged from wkered bearings rotating/spinning on these parts due to owners driving on while the bearing is howling away/knackered That bit goes for all motor vehicles.

I think I have been miss leading here, basically is there any damage to the drive shaft shown in the picture. Sorry for any confusion, I really do appreciate the help.

All sorted, wheel bearing replaced. I now understand that the spline bit I was referring to,I have been lead to beleive is used for ABS on earlier cars?
