Wifey and I have a long weekend planned this weekend in Reims. Plan has always been to take the Chimaera and enjoy some top down motoring. The wife has probably been in the Chim 4 times in the past year since I bought it as we have small kids and this is the ideal time to get time together without the kids. However it must be noted, she is neither pro nor con the TVR.

Looking at the weather forecast, rain is on the agenda. If I take the Tiv it will cost £250 in fuel and breakdown cover. If I take the company 5 series, it will cost nothing and she loves being transported in luxury. I'm worried that the rain will mean roof up which will mean she won't see the benefits of the Tiv and be reluctant to go again which I don't want to happen. Likewise, this will be my first European trip in the Tiv which I am really keen to do.

Talk me into it please.

I could see myself in a similar predicament here Karl. (In fact, we have a long weekend away planned in October, when both teenage sons are away; will take the Tiv but the family barge is so much more luxurious - but it's not a Tiv smile)

My advice would be... TAKE THE TIV and concentrate on the finer things in life like a nice hotel, good food and wine plus some day time pampering of whatever takes her fancy - within reason!

Other than that, go on, go on, go on, you know you want to!!!

I would take the better car for the job, which would be the 5 series. Sometimes you just have to be honest with yourself. If on the other hand I was going alone, or with a petrolhead mate, I'd take the TVR.

Absolutely no contest for a long weekend with your better half who is not that into cars...............take the BMW!! Has aircon if it's hot weather and doesn't leak or mist up if it's wet. My guess is that this weekend is about keeping SWMBO happy and earning brownie points?

Wait 'til you find an excuse for joining one of the eurotours later or next year and take a mate who a) won't mind whatever the weather is doing and b) will be happy to pay half!!!!

Is this sort if journey not exactly what the Chim was designed for?
It was always marketed as the grand tourer of the range.

Do it justice and follow your heart.

Though still largely a mystery to me, I have found that it is sensible to prioritise the comfort of the female of the species.

Already had this discussion regarding our forthcoming European tour holiday, the first holiday in 5 years.

My instructions are that I have to fix the aircon in the A8, before I spend anything more on the TVR.

Nuff said.

Honest truth is that for long journeys, the peace, comfort and cool aircon of the A8 auto is a joy. And she can share the driving. She hates the TVR. No aircon, no heated seats, no electric reclining seats, no air suspension, no chance of sleeping when she feels tired. And for long journeys, especially in pouring rain or anything sunny and over 25 degrees, I agree.

Hi Karl - bank some massive brownie points and save the TIV for a hoon with fellow Tivvers - Wales, Euro - I'd be up for either/both in July....

Bloody hell. Been out on the piss with work and come back to find the general consensus is BM!!!

I don't want that, I wanted moral support.

Don't worry Paul, another trip to the triangle (in the dry) is assured this summer!!!

I really want her to enjoy the car and if it was planned to be sunny, it would be the TVR for the journey no question. I just don't want to put the wife off the car in the longer term.

2 days to decide then....

You cannot win either way - pissing down with rain and the TVR is a worry and a misery, with rubbish wipers and a feeling its trying to kill you every time you hit a puddle, and if it is hot and sunny you either bake in the sun or sweat with the roof on, especially if you hit traffic. And then there's the joy of the need for a quick roof-on when the heavens open, and you have to get her 4 cases, 6 make up holdalls and three shoe bags out of the boot to extract the roof.....and you drop two of them in puddles while she is screaming at you to get on with it.

Spacious airconditioned tin top is the only way with a person of the female persuasion on board (if you still want to be talking after the first six hours.....) hehe

I seriously can't believe what I am reading here.

My Mrs is no petrolhead but does appreciate my love of TVRs.

We have done a numberof long trips including 14 hrs straight back from Italy.

A TVR is a fantastically comfortable machine to cover miles in for both driver and passenger (unless you are v tall), certainly more comfortable than my 2006 5 series. Generally,y Mrs takes a pillow and sleeps a lot. I have never ever had a moan that it is uncomfortabe.

If it gets hot - roof off. If it rains - drive slower.

It will surely make for a more exciting and memorable trip than if you take your shopping car which will be worth the extra cost of fuel.

Honestly this is a no brainer.
