While my car is with Dan at Taylor TVR having a new immobiliser fitted I have decided to take another step in tuning.

The car currently has ACT induction kit and carbon trumpets and this time I will be adding a catless Y piece I got from a thread on here (made by clive). Dan has advised that I keep the manifold pre-cats for now in case I find removing them makes the car too loud.

I was considering 20AM air meter, new chip and twin throttle bodies (again from ACT), but that little lot fitted is really starting to add up, so for approximately 1k less I could go for simply the chip, 20AM and a larger plenum rather than the twin throttle bodies.

Does anyone have thoughts on the ACT twin throttle bodies over just a larger plenum chamber? What real difference would the throttle bodies make? Thanks All!

The 20 AM and the throttle bodies require a remap. A best guess chip will only suffice if the guess is very good.
You will make modest bhp gains, but could spend quite a lot on bits and remapping and still feel its not a lot different.

An extra 20-30 bhp is barely noticeable.

You are asking enough questions that could easily be answered by trying cars that have the mods you list.

Mine has the 20AM, 72mm single plenum, bigger injectors, Clive Y, precats out, standard exhaust, stage 3 ported heads, stealth cam, shortened crumpets, lightened flywheel. Let's meet up and you can drive them back to back. Mine won't be a lot faster than yours in a straight line, but might be torquier. And you can hear what fully decatted but standard silencer sounds like.

Matt Poxon has changed his Grief to twin throttle bodies - see the article in Sprint. He's a lovely guy and lives in Essex. Mpoxon on PH. Ask him for a look/ride.

There are others around who will be happy to help. Just ask.

That's how I would tackle it. Problem is, you can spend a lot and not gain a lot.

Thanks, an extra 30bhp would get me to my target of 300. It would be great to meet some other owners, the car lives in Essex so it sounds like there are a few there.

Sound like I will also have to go back to TVR power to tweak the chip at some point, I understand the chip that comes from ACT can be reprogrammed.

You may be lucky with the chip. I bought a best guess Tornado chip and had to have it remapped. Cost almost as much as a Megasquirt system.

Are you by any chance going to Top Cats Racing's opening jamboree this Saturday? I will be there and can talk you through the cost of the extra 30 bhp. Mine makes 300 bhp. Then we can try comparing performance somewhere quiet. And exhaust sounds.

And there will be other Chim owners there with different mods and exhaust set ups. Good chance of getting lots of info at one go, as well as seeing some stunning cars.

At that price, you would be better getting an MS with bespoke loom for ExtraEFI. Will sort the fueling and timing in one hit, whilst removing the need for the 5am. Be sure to get you front pulley balanced with the new trigger wheel and keep your old loom and parts so it can be returned to standard if you decide to sell.

This. (or other suitable known and tested mappable ECU)

With coil packs. No AFM and no dizzy.... sets you up for any future mods, NA or FI. You can then throw whatever (within reason) mods you want at it... heads, cam, bigger injectors, etc... and map it to suit. simples. smile

Just my personal opinion wink

I would go for the Emerald K6 , no volt offset problems.

Dan Taylor knows my car and put a decat y piece on it a while back and fitted a set of manifolds with no pre-cats at the same time. Firstly, its not to loud but be aware, it doesn't go through the MOT like my last car which had a decat y piece but pre-cats in. I found that out last week. He also fitted the ACT Trumpets, larger plenum and smooth bore system.

I then had Jules (spitfire4v8) fit some larger injectors, 20Am meter and remap it all.

You have chosen someone to fit bits, so you either cant or don't want to do such things yourself. That being the case and assuming your distributer is not falling apart, the things that allow more air in will be need changed what ever your do and what Jules charges to remap will come as a pleasant surprise compared to some of the figures you see quoted on here.

Gents thank you. The car will not be ready for this weekend. Last year I priced up a mappable spark and fuel system and it was coming in at about 3-3.5k as I recall. Dan has advised against such a system though... I need to speak to jules, is he a commercial outfit or a private individual?

Get the MS installed for about £800 by yourself, plus £50 for crank pulley balance and £200 rolling road.

See link http://www.extraefi.co.uk/RV8_Kits.html#pnp

Or contact Shaun at MS2 Tuning to do it for about £1200, plus RR.

Yes, you can do the mapping yourself, but Shaun is a very good mapper, and IMHO you need knowledge to map Megasquirt well.
