Temperature sender
Discussion
My car is showing as running cool. The fans cut in and out at the right sort of temperatures using an IR thermometer on the radiator and I am not sure if the sender that the gauge is connected to also controls the ECU or not? I had a very bad Mot test a couple of weeks back and I wonder if the two things might be linked, with the car running rich on idle due to it thinking it is still warming up,
Any thoughts or suggestions please?

well, I see the three senders. The one behind the distributer is the TVR sender and I can see how (and why) people do the range rover mod!
The visible one is the ECU one and there are two part numbers - ETC8496 and SNB802. Do they both do the same thing please?
I would suggest to unscrew the sender as little coolant is lost and jot the number down, if its still ledgible The visible one is the ECU one and there are two part numbers - ETC8496 and SNB802. Do they both do the same thing please?

Think they are just different numbers for the same thing.

Hi everyone.
I have had the same problem with my newly acquired 400.
I bought the TVR one and then realised what a pain it is to change so after finding a thread on here about it I bought two reistors from Maplins and wired them in series to produce as near to 170 ohms as I could get.
These were then fitted between the existing Rover sender and the gauge lead.
Hey presto, the car now shows a running temperature of approx 80 degrees with the fans cutting in at just a little higher.
The problem appears to have been solved although I will fit the TVR sender just for comparison when I get chance.
As for the other ECU sender, I bought a spurious part from the local motor factors but the thread was much larger than the original. A Lucas one from ebay was however the correct one but is yet to be fitted.
Regards Chris

there was a bad connection on the gauge for the dash gauge. A bit of a clean and re-fit and that seems to be in the right area when fans are coming on and off. I changed the ECU sensor to see if that made any difference to the rich idle and the lucas one from the motor factors is coming back out today. Not a good fit and looking at Roverguage, sometimes it gives a reading and sometimes it doesnt! this is reflected in the AFM as well. Bounces around like the rev counter on my last car now!

I'm having similar issues. Was it the sensor end of the dash gauge connection that you cleaned? Mine was fine, but has started giving lower readings over the last few months. Also interesting in how you get on with the ECU temp as I found exactly the same. I'd replaced my ECU temp sensor with a Lucas on in Autumn, but following some running issues purchased Rovergauge, attached it and found it was sometimes giving readings and sometimes not. I've since purchased another relay from an LR supplier, but haven't plugged Rovergauge in to check if it's behaving yet, although the car is running better. AFM fine though on mine.
