Took the car today to Southways Automotive and they confirm my steering issue is the rack. No new ones available as far as I know. Had the rack rebuilt last year so I'm not convinced another company rebuilding it will be any good.

I've heard some people have fitted a Subaru rack? Any guidance most appreciated.

Ive got all the bits n pieces for the Scooby conversion but will probably leave until Winter now. This is all courtesy of SteveSPG.

As i understand it. You need an early Impreza rack with the removeable pinion so that it can be rotated 180 degrees to clear the chassis. Roughly they were 1990 - 2000. You also need the brackets. The brackets will need small spacers making up to go inbetween bracket and chassis mounts.

Allegedly the Tvr inner tie rods on the tvr rack will screw straight into the Scooby rack so you can also use the tvr / Ford track rod ends.

The pinion on the rack needs machining to hex 17 i think it is. This will then accept a Fiesta or Ka UJ which is hex 17 one end and TVR spline the other. Will probably have to get a new shaft made up to the correct length which goes from column to rack. Car builder solutions do such things.

Pump is an Astra mark 4 or 5. Got to be the TRW pump. Loads on Ebay. Plenty on the net re wiring these up.

I think thats it.

My Power Steering rack started leaking and it was removed and sent away for refurbishing with new seals. It started leaking shortly after I had it back and it has now been diagnosed that the pressure of the Power Steering pump is too high and it has forced one of the seals out of position. It's being sorted now, hopefully, watch this space.

If you had the kit of parts, just an easy day.

of course nothing is simple.

you could use your existing pump and fit new hoses.

it feels about the same as the original.
