Experience with thermal socks.

Back in May 2013 after reading a thread on here regarding changing all the ignition components after 30k miles, I changed all mine on the Chimaera. I also took off the plug extenders and fitted thermal socks. Initially things were good and the car really did drive beautifully, but a year later and only 2000 miles the plug leads were degrading and I have put new leads on and put the extenders back on. The socks were burning thin and the heat was burning the leads where the socks passed the exhaust manifold. I have to say the ones I bought were not expensive so if you are thinking of going down that route it will pay to buy the best there is.

I only wear them in the winter when there is snow underfoot and my shoes get wet.

Best not to wear them in the summer as they can cause athletes foot.

I have to wear Porsche branded ones or else my warranty is void. Quality is excellent though.

I went for red stitching on mine and comfort mode. I found the buckets hurt my feet after a while.

What do yo do about handling, when there's more 'thread' on one side than the other ?

The SAS used to use tights , cheaper than thermals . Give them a go perhaps ?

I think you'll find that the aircooled socks are enormously overpriced though, whereas watercooled socks are a comparative bargain so long as you get a thorough check before purchase...

Now you're on the right forum you might get a little more help. I am thinking about using these http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/acc-9002c. They are universal so you have to cut and crimp the ends to suit your engine but I like the idea of ceramic plug boots, they shouldn't burn at least.

I think you'll find the quality of the aircooled versions is far superior though. They were built to last with the mimimum of fripperies. For an example of this, not once have I removed aircooled socks and found corrosion on the inside, yet nearly every watercooled version suffers with this issue. This despite my always drying my watercooled socks before putting them away.
There's a myth that the aircooled socks can be tricky at the limit, it's largely nonsense, the early socks are fun, entertaining and tactile in a way no water cooled version will ever be. Quite frankly the latest socks leave me cold.

I bought some from the States via Ebay fairly cheapish and yes they did not last.

I am now back on the plug extenders with quality Moroso leads from Real Steel which i am very impressed with.

Ive had problems with my water cooled thermal socks bores going oval over time and cracking. They are also scored on the inside. I am told that they get too hot and I should have fitted a low temp thermostat to help prevent this?

I am now loooking at a major bill of replacing the socks entirely with new ones that have the same flawes or having them re-stitched by Knitech with their upgrades.

Any advice?

I keep losing one.
Also should I remove the socks before washing?
