Is there such a thing as a low pressure turbo?
Discussion
I used to have a Saab 9-5 2.3 LPT, (before I had the similar 250 bhp 2.3 HOT Aero). With Sports suspension and about 190 bhp it was, in all honesty, the nicer car to drive. You were totally unaware of the turbo, no big gobbets of power when it was designed to most embarrass you, no waiting for turbos to spin up, just smooth, fast power delivery and fantastic overtaking performance (for a middle-weight family auto box estate car - a real stealth car).
I have ample power in my Chim already
, BUT I wouldn't exactly say no to say an extra 50-60 bhp if it could be smoothly delivered as in the Saab. Jools (I think it was) mentioned the idea to a friend of mine recently in my presence, and confirmed it yesterday at Snetterton, and the idea of such a kit rather appeals if it could be installed perhaps without intercooler and with no additional implications (so no excessive heat issues and no upgrades to gearbox, drive shafts, clutch, diff, etc, ie within the designed-in capabilities of the standard car.
Using you guys' experience, rather than googling ad nauseam on Maxxxxx Powahhh, has anyone got any suggestions for a simple kit that I can perhaps install myself/ourselves (over a barbecue Sunday
), for about the price of a set of tyres? Or am I pipe-dreaming as usual?

The thing is you'll still need to modify everything that you would for a normal turbo install (apart from the intercooler if you wanted) so it would cost more or less the same. How about doing a proper turbo install but change the engine management too so you can run two separate maps, one for low pressure and one for whatever everyone else runs?

Joking aside, what you've described is not at all far off what an SC Power rotary blower will deliver. I'm sure the unit could be specced and sized to deliver its boost very early in the rev range, which is what the saab LPT system does. Problem with trying that with a turbo on a big(ish) V8 is that the necessarily small turbo housing (to promote early spool) will just become a restriction up the range - maybe something clever could be done with variable vanes and nozzles but the electronics and control gear involved would put it well beyond any feasibly DIY install
Thanks guys - this is turning interesting.
I was talking about petrol engines throughout. My Saabs were proper ones, 2.3 petrol.
I think what I was trying to establish is whether there is a relatively cheap upgrade which would a just give me 360 bhp against the present 300, hence keep the car within the stress limits of the standard drive shafts, diff etc.
I want to avoid what I understand to be the cost and the issues that can be created by adding 140-200 bhp, as I am already happy with the way the car drives.
One possible issue - my 5 litre engine already has a 10:1 compression ratio.

...as an aside (but not wanting to start a new thread however I know that QBee is a friendly face so won't object too much) - has anyone seen this:
