any clutch experts out there??
Discussion
Ive had the clutch replaced/uprated with an AP racing one from power. And its making a horrible noise when you engage gear, its more noticeable in 1st or reverse when moving slowly, getting in out of the garage.
weird thing is when its cold, the noise is really loud but when the car is warmed up the noise disappears completely.
I took it back to the guy who fitted it and he heard it this morning at its worst. He recon its not the clutch but said there is a phosphor-bronze bearing that could be the culprit, is he talking *hite???

My guess would be thrust bearing from what symtoms you describe as if moving slowly in 1st or reverse you tend to have it spinning for longer IYSWIM, whereas quick changes through the gears are more snappy/short duration on clutch. Weird though as with a new clutch change it's usually sensible to change the thrust bearing too.
This might sound a bit daft but do you have any heat shields anywhere? I had exactly the same two nights ago, only audible when creeping in and out of the garage. I suspected the thrust bearing but it was actually the heat shield over the nearside manifold, just gently touching it and causing a metallic grating sound. That was also temperature dependent.

Thanks, but no heat shields fitted. Definitely coming from the clutchhad the same, its the bronze spigot bush. You have to take it all down again. Get a new bush first, and let it soak in a cup of motoroil for a coiuple of days.
To get the bush out, use a grease gun and fill up the hole in the middle of the bush completely with grease. The you use a bolt with the same diameter as the hole in the spigot bush. Use a hammer and hit the grease, it will press the bush out!
before fitting the new bush, check that it fits the spigot on the gearbox, if its tight, you need to hone it up to make it run smoothly. I had to do this with the bush in situ! Use a plastic mallet or a cylinder bigger than the bush hole to hammer it in...

Just to close this out and for anyone looking in he future, it was the thrust bearing.
Also the thrust bearing carrier must be fitted with the flats towards the fork. Get it wrong and be prepared to remove your gearbox, AGAIN.
Massive thanks to Colin for giving up his time to help me, especially when work commitments were taking him abroad the next day. I owe you many
I changed the phosphor bronze bush and the crank case oil seal at the same time, thanks for the advice Ole
