ECU Price

Morning,

My car was taken off to the Garage this morning on the back of a low loader with suspected brain damage.....anyone know how much a replacement ecu may set me back and what cheaper alternatives there might be? i.e recon one and where I could source it from?

ECUs are a monstrous ripoff, considering they contain about £20/worth of electronics.

If it is just the chip that has blown I have a regular griff 500 one here you can have, if it will work.

Thanks for all the help received so far - it now seems that it could be a wiring falut and I may not have to stump up for an ecu - fingers crossed. thanks again

Might be worth fitting a tornado chip if you need to replace the ECU - at least this will pave the way for a custom mapping later.

Make shure it is the ECU, befor buying anyhting, see is you can borrow one for a while, i had a missfire on my griff which, had everyone convinced the ECU was faulty, in the end after lots and lots of work I tracked it down to a few plugs in the loom that were corroded, ill fitting and poorly manufactured.

the car is at webbs in bristol and they have tested it. it seeems its terminal brain damage. they ahve swapped ecu's from other cars and it has worked, therefore unfortunately its the ECU, I ahve had to order a used one, but its still a bunch of cash......I have a feeling that a TVR may be for Xmas, not just for life.....

Too right about that, mine looked pretty manky when I replaced them last, particularly near the bulkhead.

is the ECU not just a standard Range Rover part with a remapped chip?
If it is I'd take a look on ebay / Rover breakers. Then swap the std chip for the TVR one in the old ecu.

Thinking about it, Mark Adams might also be able to help.

The chip is in a socket, the LR/RR ones are hardwired (soldered in) I believe.

Could try changing chip, just in case chip has barfed, these are only about a fiver.

I think you can also have the ECU repaired, a search here should show something.

get a standard 3.9 discovery ecu (mid 90s)ring your local superchips dealer and they will fit a socket to your ecu for a reasonable sum

the ECU is basicaly a rechipped lucas 14CUX from what I recall

thanks for all the advice but its now sorted and im 800 quid lighter....my faith has been severely tested.

I think this all came about when I had charged the battery and then put the contents of the footwell back in, it seems whilst trying various permutations to get everything fitted, i accidentaly bridged the battery terminals with the ecu(oops) easy to do though when pushing the carpet back in to place.

this had the effect of frying the ecu and making me 800 worse off.

i feel stupid, but its easy to do so be careful out there........

this experience has really put me off, its been one thing after another recently and i might sell and get a passat diesel or skoda or something......

...having said that Ive spent so much recently that it should be completely sorted now

update, following the ecu rpoblem and one or two other niggles, the Chimaera has gone.
