Just wondering, has anyone bought a 4.6 Rangie lump and put it in the Chim? Would like to hear any experiences, what work/parts would be required to take a 4.6 straight from an auto Range Rover and plant it in the Chim....

Lots of thanks,

Chilli smile

A few have, it's basically the same but you might find the cam is more for stump pulling than bhp, just be aware of slipped liners they seem more common on range rovers

My original 4.6 came out of a fire damaged RR.

It was fitted with the Real Steel Typhoon cam and a 72 mm plenum and made 275 horses.

I ran this faultlessly for about 30 TDs, refreshed it and it's now in Dereks gas sniffer! Strong old engines..........

Chop off / extract the locating stud on the crank flange so the flywheel will bolt on.
Strip the front end to fit your timing cover, cam is also different so you'll need a new one.
Swap sumps over, remove 4.6 oil pick up & fit TVR one.

It's not an inconsequential amount of work... If you want higher performance NA it's typical to also swap the 4.6 pistons for 4.0 ones to raise the CR... Then if you want sporty cam you also need to look at valve reliefs in the pistons and reworking heads for a higher lift cam etc (unless you swap the TVR heads over as well).

At the end of the day it ends up that all you really want is a later block with caps, 4.6 crank & rods then 4.0 pistons. The rest you grab off the TVR except the bearings / cam / followers etc which you probably want new?

That's what I have in the green chim.

That plus lightened fly, 72mm plenum etc.

Its since done about 20k road miles and hundreds of full bore 1/4 mile sprints.
It has been rebuilt with top hat liners, ARP mains and head studs and also one of the 4.0 pistons was replaced (thanks again for that Rob).

Current lump is a V8D jobbie built by Rob, and running 10.6:1. Cost quite a few bob, (build details on my profile) and I don't want to split it/modify it anymore, so thinking of rebuilding a 4.6 with the intention of turbo charging it, so low compression and suitable cam... Bit of a winter project along with restoration of my old and much loved 'B' roadster....

I have a rebuilt RR 4.6 block in the garage now. Tophats, 4.0 pistons. Also got new stg3 heads, ported inlet and 45mm trumpets. MC1 cam. I really want a twin plenum to go with!

And also wondering, when I reassemble the heads should I get the yella terra roller rockers set? Anyone tried it?

I thought the engine does not rev enough for roller rockers ? I thought they just last longer .

Anyways they reduce friction. Friction is a problem when using double valvesprings and high lift cams... like we do smile

Speak to Dom at power about " just fitting " 4.0 pistons to a 4.6 RR donkey
If you put the 4.5 / 5.0 cam in also , I think the the valves might clout the piston tops ? ( depending on dialling wich cam in )
You may need the valve cut outs machining on the piston tops / Dom has the gear to do this
Just to be on the safe side
Hope this helps

Bonjour Heath

Forget changing the engine perhaps we should be looking into the best way to modify the excellent 4L lump in my Chim to a 4.6 or may be 5L without the expense of a new / second hand lump from a breakers yard,
I guess the heads of either will need work so no difference in cost for the heads.

Any news on my Griff?
