Noisy Diff After Refurb

Thought I'd start a new thread as previous one seems to have spiralled away form my original question.
I had the BTR diff in my 450 refurbed recently due to oil leak, when it was done by a company run by an ex factory member it was in for seals and bearings only. At the time he commented on the lack of backlash in the diff but a "friend" who was looking after the job while I was on holiday asked him to go ahead with only the seals and bearings.
I got the car back and the diff is now noisy, a number of people advised me to run the car for 1000 or so miles and it should settle down, I'm now in the 350-400 miles range and if anything the diff is sounding worse. It is noisy between 40 and 50 mph although is occasionally noticeable at different speeds, it also seems worse after a long run when I suspect the oil is thinner, it is also more noticeable when lifting off and coasting although that may be that the exhaust noise isn't drowning the noise out.
Has anybody else suffered a noisy diff following a refurb?
Should I persevere hoping it wears in or just give up and have the crown and pinion done?
