Slow roast Chimp
Discussion
Got stuck in nose to tail stuff for nearly two hours last night (trying to get into Global Gathering for any clubber types)...although by constantly running the fans flat out, I kept the water temp to around 80 (on the gauge at least), I am a bit concerned as the car was soaking heat like no-ones business. The oil pressure didn't drop away to nothing though so I'm hopeful all will be well. Caned it through some of warwickshire's finest on the way home this morning just to see

have you had any mods to your cooling system? i ask as i run a 4hc - fans work - no coolent loss etc - but as soon as i hit traffic temp gauge goes up & up - once maxed off the dial. i have been told on last service that opp temp was ok (they ran a thermo somewhere else)and guage sensor is unaccurate and picks up ambient temp etc. as soon as i hit open roads it's fine and creeps down 70ish on hot days. wondering what to try.
well i also got stuck in the traffic on the m25 yesterday and even with the fans running all the time the temp got to about 93 and no further ,but it does get very hot inside the car as the fan is bloody usless ,i can only think that the exhausts would be better if wrapped to keep the heat down in the engine bay so where can i get the exhaust wrap stuff from and is there more powerfull fans that i can fit so that i dont have to keep watching the temp gauge and why does it get so hot my mondeo can sit in traffic all day without getting hot at all so there must be some mods available to keep the car cool ....ian...

Mondeo steel body - good heat conductor and puny engine.
TVR - GRFP body lousy heat conductor and big engine.
Steve
I was worried yesterday, sat in roasting heat in traffic for the first time in the Chim. Sat for an hour, the needle hit 95, in came the fans and she didn't get any hotter, relief as I was queing to get into Gaurds Polo surrounded by Astons and Ferraris, didn't want to let Blackpool down....

I'll turn the ignition off next time, as yesterday was the 1st time in "will she/won't she overheat" mode, I didn't want to turn off in case she didn't turn on again ! No worries now, and how much better does she sound that a 355 ?
Although I must admit to being thrashed coming of the A30 on to the M25. sat behind a '67 vette, red with a white stripe down the side. He looked at me, I looked at him, we both floored around the roundabout and he just shot off
can't believe it was a standard car, it left me standing......and what a sound
lots of nice metal there, many Ferraris, a wonderful DB5 with the number plate AMB 1 and a Venturi (never heard of them before, but it looked really tidy) anybody know anything about them ?

Sat in the jam from the Superbikes for 2hrs, crash on M20 / m25 junction and general SBK traffic - temp never went over 85 oil pressure fine at 1 bar in tick over - F****in hot but just sat in outside lane (so no one coming down that side with door one to get the heat out - but at least a nice day in a cool convertible - nice purple 500 chimera parked at SBK as well

Ignition off next time - must've cost you a fortune!!quote:
Careful you don't run into the TVR Catch 22 with this one. Switch off with a vaguely hot engine and if you're suffering the common hot starter motor problem it won't restart until it cools down, can be half an hour which could be embarrasing depending where you are. Perhaps try it somewhere convenient to you when you've got plenty of time.
right this starter motor problem ,i know it happens when the engine bay is hot ,but which part of the starter breaks down ,i know that the soleniod is trying to work but it does not make a proper click just a small one so is the problem with the soleniod plunger itself as it is a close fit inside the soleniod,i say this as i have just stripped the thing down and coated the moving parts with high temp anti seize compound as used on the rolls royce olympus ( which i work on) and i have cleaned up the plunger assy with very fine wet&dry ,it all works at the moment but i will see what it is like when very hot .what a very cheap looking starter by magnet marreli in such a brute of a car and the worst part of the job was trying to shut the damn alarm up when i reconnected the battery ,it has a sigma system that works very well if you know how to use it.....
nah the starter bolts came out quite easily once i got the car up on axle stands ,and first disconnected the earth lead on the battery so that there were no fireworks ,a 5/16 hex bit fitted to an extention was all that was required, and touch wood its still been ok even with a very hot engine bay....
Have you tried adding a super coolant like Redline Waterwetter or Zeron plus to your cooling system as these products are supposed to dissipate the heat quicker and remove hot spots from the engine to cool it down better.
