Put another fat earth cable from the engine to the chassis and see if it fixes it.
I have one from the swirl pot bolt to the cross brace bolt.

not the spring gone in the barrel when you turn the key to 3 start?

Ah, now this may trying to teach my Dads Mam how to extract the inside of an egg but....
If I leave my car unlocked with the key out ( I think thats it) then go back to start it after a day or so, the fuel pump primes but nothing else.
Get out, remove key, lock the car, walk away, sneak back up on it, unlock it get in, turn the key and hey presto.
Well it works for me, I guess it is the immobiliser

With the key in the ignition you can simply press the alarm fob to unset the immobiliser.
