Hi all,

My roof is in need of a little TLC. Its going ever so slightly green and needs a litle bit of re-water proofing as well. Having read around it appears Thompsons Canvas and Brick Sealant comes up top trumps for the water proofing bit, but what can I use to re-black (or clean) my roof before sealing it? I don't want to seal the green stuff in. Or is Thmopsons thick, black stuff that will paint over everything?

Thanks,

Rob

Renovo is what you need.

Do a search for further info or click the link on one of their many adverts on PH.

Heard some mixed reviews about Renovo. Go for the whole kit or just the dye stuff?

I bought the whole kit, cleaner, rear window cleaner which works great, dye and water proofer - I've done my roof 3 times now with the same kit and not run out yet...

Sounds great, but where do you get algae spray from? A marine specialist?

All you need to blacken the roof is good old fashioned black cherry blossom shoe polish.....

Just apply it fairly thickly, working into the seams, and polish off after about ten mins.....

Have used it with success over the years on my Triumph Spitfire, TR6, Morgan, Westfield and Tiger........

Sounds daft I know, but it works.............

And costs about 70p.....

Is that the same stuff used for caravans & tents & otheroutdoor stuff. I'm about to get my hands on some renovo but want to get rid of the green stuff first. The only stuff I can find is for man-made materials - any ideas for the Chimeara roof/hood.

So I did the roof with the Renovo products yesterday, and it's come up fantasticly. Minor problem.... it rained just after applying the second coat of Reviver, and has run. All over the paintwork. Nice.

Getting it off the windows has been no problem, but I'm very reluctant to start scrubbing away at the paintwork - have no wish to get a full respray done.

Any thoughts as to what could be used to remove the black streaky stains that won't melt the paint?!?

I think I'd try claying my car first with something like mothers. www.maxx-waxx.com/Mothers-California-Gold-Clay-Bar-System-SAVE-10-ON-UK-RRP-p-16144.html
I should imagine that would get it off the paint.

I posted this elsewhere but worth saying here too. If your green roof is looking dull it's probably all the grey dust stuck in the weave. Try this.

Deep clean the roof first. If you can get all the muck out of the weave it will look very much better and more even. I used washing up liquid and a nail brush and scrubbed hard. This dislodged the muck and also the water proofing. I then drenched the roof with a hose pipe and scrubbed it until all the suds stopped. If there's any soap left the sealer won't bond. Then left it to dry completely

Brush on fabsil liquid liberally and quickly. Brush it on in lines and don't let the previous line dry before you paint the next. Best to mask off the window and bodywork on the rear section. Do the roof off the car.

I did mine 3 years ago and haven't needed to do any proofing since.

Don't use spray on water proofing. The fabric needs to be soaked in liquid silicon.

Any other tips other than protect the paintwork whilst applying the reviver ?

I intend to do the roof off the car so that should help too.

A length of kitchen roll (bounty!) along the bottom of the hood, with a sheet over the top, stuck down with some masking tape does it.

Do the bottom bit by the paintwork first and check to make sure that nothing has been sucked up by the kitchen roll. If not, proceed. If it has, wipe away quickly and replace kitchen towel.

My roof has gone from looking a tad shabby to very nice.

Agree with everything that's been said about cleaning it and Fabsil, but why do you need all this masking tape stuff? How messy are you guys with a paint brush - would hate to see your decorating I just pour some Fabsil into a jam jar and use a 1.5" brush to paint the stuff on carefully wiping off any drips as I go, it doesn't affect the paint. I do it once a year in spring. Rich...

trouble is if you use weathershield and put 3 or 4 coats on you get fed up with wiping as you go,much easier to mask off, lets face it you only do it once a year, and the centre you can do off the car,i can highly recommend this product, had a few small leaks not anymore.all though i havent used the others,£14 pounds for 5 litres ,bargain.done the garden furniture too, water just sits on the surface, brilliant.

Quick question... does the black dye soak through and appear on the pale inside of the canvas on the rear section where it can be seen from the inside?
