Temperature Gauge

Hi

I was about 20 minutes into a drive this morning in my 1995 4.0 Chimaera and the temperature gauge (alarmingly!) went up to 120+.

Pulled over to let the engine cool down and after 45 mins or so the needle swung over to 120+ on the second click of the ignition.

Drove back home and I am still getting the same problem when starting from cold. The coolant levels all look fine.

Any help in fixing the problem would be much appreciated (I am guessing perhaps a faulty gauge or sensor) ?

Hi, if it is a Caerbont gauge the issue may be that it has gone out of calibration. Just had a similar issue in that the gauge works, but reads to wrong temperature. If you have an ECUmate you can verify the water temperature from a separate source. Failing that you could always check the gauge and sensor on the bench using a 12volt source, a pan of heated water and a thermometer.

Note that this is cheaper than replacing thermostat and water pump as I did before realising where the issue was!!!!

If it keeps reading max, then I would suggest there is a short to earth on the sender wire. Start checking the wiring from the sender to the guage.

You can rule out the guage by disconnecting the cable from the sender. If the guage reads zero when disconnected then the sender is shorted out. If it still reads max then it is the sender wire or the guage.
