Chim 500 no longer overheating, but...

Hi all, I had an overheating issue recently which seems to have been resolved. The temp never goes above 90 and the fans kick in without problem around then, however when I'm driving the temp drops to between 60 and 70.

I started the engine again a few minutes after stopping and it idled back up around 85.

Any advice greatly appreciated

Whatever you do, don't relay on the dash gauge for any meaningful information. Connect to the ECU using Rovergauge or ECU mate for a more accurate measurement.

What you describe is exactly what they do on an average autumn day. If you stop then restart a few minutes later, all the heat in the block has acted as a heater on the cooling system, warming the water very nicely.

I managed a 70 trip this evening without any cooling problems.

Does anyone else find they have to bleed their cooling system occasionally?

Only issue I have to deal with now is faulty wipers. They seem to stick and don't responded when I move the stalk up and down, but moving them by hand kicks then back In to action

Try cleaning (or simply replacing) the park switch under the wiper motor. It will probably sort your wiper problem. Will cost about £12 for a Lucas one.

The wipers on my car behaved like that when I bought it.
I hoped that a new brush plate and park switch would cure it but when I took the motor apart it was badly burnt out inside, the brush plate barely holding the carbon brushes as most of it was missing!
In my case the only cure was a rebuilt motor. In this case the Lucas 29W is specific to the TVR's as it has a different gearwheel. It therefore costs a LOT!!! I hope you are luckier.
