Clean your MAF sir?

Last weekend I started the first part of my performance upgrade and fitted an ACT smooth bore inlet and K&N filter.

I had to cut off about 6 inches of pipe to get it all to fit and as I had the MAF off I thought I'd give it a clean on the outside. I also took the opportunity to clean the LH rocker box cover and so unplugged all the LH plug leads.

When I put it all back together the car was much more punchy with smoother running and instant throttle response.

The new pipe can't be the cause of the better running as it will only help at full throttle and this was better from tickover.

I must have inadvertently fixed something during the install.

Over the next few days the car went back to how it was before so today I took the MAF off again split the casing so I could get to the innards and cleaned it with some electrical contact cleaner (alcohol in a can).

Put it all back together again and it goes like stink!!

Anyone else cleaned the MAF and had such a change?

PS. New trumpets from ACT and a thermal plate next.

To be honest the hot wire element runs pretty hot, so any dirt either burns off off, or forms a crispy coat that wont come of with a quick squirt of cleaner- so the results are more likely to the ECU re adjusting its long term fuel trim to a slightly altered airflow.

Could you by any chance have a dodgy plug lead? Or connection? When I first had my car it ran pretty well, but I found another 25 bhp and more get up and go........by a friend pushing the no8 plug lead fully back onto the plug.

I was thinking that too, I pulled all the plug leads off and made sure that the little screws on the end of the plugs were on properly and that the pleads leads were tight and checked the connectors on the MAF.

As long as it keeps up its current performance I'll leave it alone. (Until I put the trumpets its)
