Hi Guys,

I'm new to all of this. Only had my Chimaera a few months but already require advice.

Been having problems starting once hot. Never fails to start though. Just turns over very slow and slowly increases in speed until it starts. The mod wise hot start kit has been fitted. Long shot I know as I understand that's more for if it doesn't actually turn over.

Any ideas on this one?

Also new fault last night. It cut out after a spirited pull away from a set of lights up to about 60mph. Felt like it started misfiring but then cut out. Started again but cut out straight away. Left to cool for about half an hour. It then started but wasn't running well. Got it home and turn it off. Would not restart after this. Cranked over quickly but no fire.

This morning it started fine. Once hot turn off and restarted. Cut out straight away. Locked and then unlocked the car and it started and ran fine still poss a bit lumpy. Could this be immobiliser?

Could I poss have a few problems here?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ta

Chris

With regard to your hot start, the fact that the starter is turning but slowly means it isn't getting enough voltage. Your best bet is to upgrade and replace the big red cable that runs from the battery positive terminal to the starter. It degrades with time and when hot resistance increases quickly so voltage drops. Buy a thicker cable or insult are it.

The hot start kit just boosts power to the starter solenoid not the actual motor. 2 seperate hot start problems, 2 different fixes.

You don`t need a hot start kit ,just a relay and harness .

Which is what the hot start kit is ...a relay and wires, but I think Daz is saying there is other ways of getting around this issue.

Take the new live feed from the starter motor ,the big thick one . Use the old solenoid feed just to switch the relay then ground it .

The fuse can be incorporated in the relay holder . Mine sits in the engine bay at the back of the plenum,it works perfect ..hot start good bye cool

My immobiliser has been left alone

Regarding your cutting out problem, there are lots of things it could be. But it sounds vaguely reminiscent of the symptoms I had when I got stranded in France with what turned out to be a failed coil. But it could equally have been the ignition amp module. The fact that your problem is worse when hot could indicate that either component is very nearly knackered.

If you can find someone nearby to swap coils with temporarily that would be my first test. Or simply change the coil anyway - if it's old, it's only a matter of time before it fails. A new one will probably be less than £50 and is probably a fairly straightforward DIY job - access is easy. The ignition amp likewise - probably about £30, and easy to replace once you've got the coil off. Use a smear of heatsink compound.

I'd be tempted to replace both the coil and amp, and even if it doesn't fix the problem (which it might not) at least you've got peace of mind that you've eliminated two ageing components that could have let you down at any time.

New 2kw starter motor fixed mine. Hot start kit did not. You may have more than one issue. I bypassed the infernal Meta immobiliser.

For slow starter spin, a new earth from the battery neg to the engine block. As short as possible, through the battery breather hole. Halfords £5 .
