Roll bar, Roll hoop...
Discussion
Considering something extra for safety, getting supportive seats, got harnesses, would like to do some trackdays etc next year but don't want to compromise hood & general touring too much. I have my eye on an event that requires MSA standards. Any suggestions welcome. Thanks in advance.
What's the MSA event?
AI simple hoop behind the seats will protect your head in the event of a track day roll over. You have seen mine - it's one of the few that is tall enough but doesn't get in the way. Roll Centre Racing in St Ives, Cambs make them.
But it is clamped to the chassis, so is not MSA compliant.
If you are looking at the TVR sprint championship, someone will be along who knows the requirements, which might not be as "full cage" as racing.

Richard - I have one of these sat in my garage doing nothing...

Thanks chaps.
Anthony, the event is just a local classic / vintage demonstration run at Sywell Aerodrome at the end of next summer, not challenging but a really nice weekend. I was led to believe that all cars need to be MSA compliant but some of the cars running this year definitely did not have the complete cages in but just basic roll bars so I'll need to find out more.
Martin, does this cage need welding to the chassis or can it be clamped ?
Thanks again, Richard

Sportmotive.
Bolts on with 6 fixings.
Martin, YHM
Peter, I assume you bar picks up on seat belt anchor points and looks like the welded in bosses (where I currently have my harnesses fixed to), please correct me if I'm wrong, but where are the other 2 points ?
Anthony, I'll look forward to your pics also as my memory's not that good.
Thanks chaps.

Absolutely correct plus Two more fixings to the rear two outrigger to body bolts. Thanks chaps.
Mine (Roll Centre Racing) clamps onto the rear chassis top rail just inwards of the standard TVR harness mounting points, which are on the rear top corners of the chassis (same as the Sportmotive one), and onto the downwards sloping tube that you can see inside the wheel arch, that joins the back corner of the outrigger. So it is not as wide as the Sportmotive one, but for tall geezers it has the advantage of being a few inches further back, so less likely to bang your head in the event of an accident.
The design of the Roll Centre Racing roll cage is (similar to the Sportmotive one) a hoop that goes inside the targa hoop, but with the outer verticals just behind the seat centres, and two sloping supports that go down, through the parcel shelf, to the rear of the chassis. There is no diagonal cross tube.
The standard mounting boss for the top fixing of your four/six point harness comes on hoop's vertical tubes, and is immediately behind your headrest, so to use it you will need Westfield/Caterham style shorter harnesses.
I talked to the factory during manufacture and had my bosses moved to the rear, sloping support tubes of the roll cage. This has the advantage of moving them to a point some way behind the seats, meaning I can use standard harnesses, and my harness fixing point if almost directly above the TVR supplied one. This is however not directly behind the centre of your seat, but a little inboard. BTW, the TVR one is concealed immediately underneath the parcel shelf - you will have to drill through to find it. If you look at a bare chassis (see the Sportmotive link chassis picture), the mountings are right on the rear top corners of the chassis of all but the very earliest cars, I believe. I am not referring to the inertia reel top fixing.
I will take photos, with harnesses fitted, tomorrow. Richard (and anyone else), just let me know if you want to see it in the flesh. I can, at great personal hardship, make this an excuse to use the TVR for my daily drive one day next week.

Thanks Anthony, I need to have a look at my car closely to determine which I think will be best for me, which I can't do until next Tuesday, but even then I think it will be best to wait until I get my new seats as potential small changes in their orientation and geometry compared to my existing originals may make a difference to my choice of roll bar.
here is the sportmotive roll bar out of the car so You can see the mounting points and harness points , now fitted to My chim.

or You can go the whole hog and do this.....

both can be seen if You want to see how the sportmotive bar fits near kimbolton ( not far from northants )
cheers
Geoff.

I think that may be a "John special" Daz.
John is now working on TVR`s for customers,so can do bespoke stuff like making the clutch lighter ,electric fully adjustable electric power steering and full rebuilds .No job to large !
If its sprinting you are thinking about the TVR, CMHS and other sprint and speed championships have no requirements for a roll bar of any kind. You can enter in a bog standard car. Having said that i would feel very uncomfortable chucking a soft top car around properly without a roll hoop or cage. I have a full cage as a result, most people have a rear hoop/half cage but some dont have anything and just accept the risk. In 15 years of sprinting I have yet to see a TVR roll. There is always a first time for everything though.

Shelsley Walsh, or however you spell it, hill climb looks to me to be a prime candidate for rolling a Chim. The YouPube videos all seem to be taken up high just after the left hand bend, and to me it looks like there's quite a deep ditch to oversteer into on the leftGassing Station | Chimaera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
