Just realised my new headunit doesn't switch on without having the ignition on . I am told my TVR expert that Position 1 (steering unlock) NEVER acted as Auxillary and that a new live needs to run from the switch to the head unit . I never doubt my expert smile . Just wondered if anyone else had come across this . I only found it a pain whilst using phone hands free through my head unit , turned off the ignition and lost the call.

The radio must have a permanent live otherwise it will lose all of the memory presets when you turn the ignition off. I'm taking a guess at what you have but I'll bet there's bullet connections on the red and yellow wires on the new radios loom, red probably will be permanent and yellow switched. Run both wires going into the radio from the red wire, there's normally a spare bullet connection to allow you to do this.

If you want to be coy about this, do what i did and swap the lives over for the boot solenoid and the live (whilst keeping another constant live at the head unit)

This takes 10 minutes, gives you an ignition operated head unit which doesnt lose presets, and a boot that opens without the key in.

Yes you need a permanent live but if you don't have a switched live on the other cable (Acc) you will have to turn the unit of manually every time you exit the car confused if I understand what the OP'er was saying correctly then the linky I posted is what you need.

It's the price you pay for being able to listen to the radio without the keys in the ignition smile I know people don't really steal radios any more but I take the face off of mine every time that I leave the car anyway, that turns it off.

Better still I never switch the bugger on so never worry about turning it off on exit hehe

You're quite right with the solution . My Tuscan and Sag work on Aux as you would expect with their Ford Steering columns but I understand it's because of TVR implementation of the Vauxhall column and switch. Obviously the ignition switch designers were giving you the option of having switched Aux or not, by implementing the 15A contact but disabling it with the raised tab and I guess it's intentional to remove the plastic if you want to use a switch Aux ( but TVR never thought about doing it hehe
