The best is of course the one that is omitted from the list of choices you gave. smile

Forget sort after you require the best, which are those engines which have been serviced correctly by a competent person and if it needs be have had any rebuilds done already and most importantly by a competent engineer. There are many threads on here about best RV8, buy on "condition", as any badly maintained or mistreated engine can cost you thousands for a re build.

The 'best' is whatever one happens to be parked in your garage, be that one of the 'normal' three engines or the nutters out there who have non standard capacity thumbup

450 it is then hehe

Seriously though, I agree with portzi, it's all about condition. Because a well looked after 400 will give you better service than a rough 500 as well as costing you a lot less.

Depends what you want. On the basis they are all in well cared for good running condition I'd go for the 4.3 or 4.5, I have the 4.3 and would probably stick with it, great engine. The 4l for me is just too lacklustre. BUT I know people who prefer it because it's a lazy cruising v8. So depends what you want and of course condition.

Ive heard the 400 is more of a cruiser.
And the 430 and 450 have more low down grunt.
Better for a and b road blasts.

As others have said, buy on condition.
There have been 450 beaten by well looked after 400.

My mate has a 400 that is sorted, it made me go out & get mine (a 430 but more by happen stance).
And he doesn't drive slow & has experience of much faster motors & he is more than happy with it, so don't let these "400 is slow" put you of, try several & get the one that grabs you the most ('cause if you just try one, they are so great you will be blinded) (Does that make sense?)

Totally agree with the above, you have to look at and drive a few and buy on condition of the individual car. I drove a good few 400's and I was honestly shocked at how different they felt. One in particular was actually really under powered compared to others I'd driven, must have had a problem or cam wear etc.
In the end I found the 400 I own now and that immediately felt stronger and spot on. I've owned lots of fast cars and can't for one minute believe that anybody would buy a 400 that's running and preforming as it should and be disapointed with it.
It's like anything, once you get used to it then you start to crave more power, but that would be the same whatever you bought.
Best of luck with finding a good'un!

Why would TVR have brought out the 500 if it wasn't 'the best'

Exactly. No substitute for cc`s. Bigger the better.

If you think you may go forced induction sometime in the future get a 4.3 They have a perfect low compression.

That's too ambitious, a fair 500 only makes about 275.

Indeed they do, but I was just referring to the normal 240 hp 400's, I never looked at or drove a HC when I was looking, seen quite a few for sale since though mind, not sure how rare they are?

Taken from the TVR club website.
From what I've seen and learnt from here though all of the "claimed" power figures are usually quite far off the mark in reality frown

At Roar 08 there were at least 10 500s on the Dyno, the best was just under 275.
