Help! Handbrake stuck on!

Trying to leave work, and my hand break won't release. I can't decide if the non on the end has less play than usual, as it never had much, but it simply won't release. RAC man had no ideas. Anyone on here have any useful advice. I'm trying to get home, so any advice tonight very welcome!

You can't put the handbrake down or the brakes are stuck on although the lever is down?

You can normally get more purchase on the lever if you press hard on the brake pedal if that's the problem, to be honest my handbrake is so ineffective that I wouldn't have a problem driving miles and miles with it on

The lever simply won't go down. It was a bit stiff this morning, and got most of the way down and was a but unwilling to go the last inch, before which the warning light wouldn't turn off. Was fine at lunch but is now properly stuck in the fully on position

You got the silver leven button on the end?

If you have strip the handle grip down, mine just slides off but I think it's supposed to have a couple of grub screws in it. Get to the standard black button underneath the shiny alloy one and try using that instead, the leven grip sometimes slides forward if it isn't tight enough and stops you releasing the handbrake.

Hope you got sorted. If not you could try backing off the tension in the cable via the adjusters which are located above the diff on the off side but a f****r to get at by the roadside. Are there any adjusters on the calipers- can't you take the lever off the calliper just to get you moving, assuming it's not the lever as per the earlier post. HTH

Engine running (for brake vac) & press pedal hard to see if that gives slack to get off.

If not you may well have seized cable / handbrake mechanism but you may just need to pull it on a bit more to release the ratchet (same achieved by slackening the adjuster).

Thanks very much for the ideas everyone. Ended up having to head home a different way, and will get it to a garage tomorrow courtesy of the RAC. Very frustrating. Hopefully nothing too expensive to fix!
