Anyone got a Garage Lift ?
Discussion
I want to install a 4 post lift in my garage so I can do my own maintenance on my Chim and other cars.....the type where you drive the car on the ramps and raise he car.
My garage is a two and a half (bubblecar) car size but an integral part of the house with a block and beam floor so I will need to check the floor loading for the posts
Anyone got one of these? are there any other things I should take ito account ?
thanks
Chris

The problem with these sissor lifts is that they dont alow easy access the the botom of the car. They are fine if you want to change the oil or do some chassis maintinance, but any more than that and its next to useless. I have one and still had to put the chim on axal stands to reomve the prop shaft and diff! I would talk to the guys that make or sell the 2 post lifts, tell them your problem and they my do a product to suit.
if u go for the 4 poster lift you need the wheels free version to support the full car by the chassis,to let u work on all suspention etc at once,
the beam jack only lifts one end(unless u have 2)and clearance is restricted.
a2 poster lift will probibley restrict acess to the interiar as in u wont be able to oper the doors to get in or out (i have to climb out of the cerby window) whatever u choose think about flush mounting it,one of our 4 posters the car bottoms out on and on afew of the 2 posters i have to jack the exotics up.
boath are available in single phase or swap motors,or u can use a phase converter(as mentioned)you can pick them up 2nd hand for arround £400,speak to a manifacturer about your exact needs ,could u use your beamed floor to your advantage as if flush fitted it dosnt restrikt floor space & u wont tripp over the thing! good look.ps youll find your "friends" will increase and be visiting more regular! happy hunting

Thanks. A bit pricey for my purposes though.
Paul.
I quite like this solution for what I need - www.restorationramps.co.uk
Price ok, 16ft version should do the trick and I can use it inside or outside.
The 2 post lifts are also a possible but I am concerned if they can be adjusted to lift a Chim in the right places ?
thanks for all comments

Hi using ramps all day at work please remember the one you are considering may be cheap but can be very limited in use always laying on your back or on your knees ?
ie cant remove any wheel with ease. great for oil changes and under bodywork, exhausts, and minor service work not very practical for major work.
