after an anti-freeze change recently, whilst bleeding the radiator of air I managed to strip the threads on the uterly pathetic plastic plug rendering the thing useless.

I managed to source a much better shiny metal replacement from my local Rover dealer @ £10.35!
part no: RKTP 9401.

how much? "we all charge that sir"

A standard metric bolt (M10 I think) plus a fibre washer will also do the job. About 50p from the local hardware store...

Nothing from my bolts box...

Aye, that's what I used - PTFE tape instead of washer.

Unless Leven do one (at 60 quid!!)...

Oh, it's leaking from somewhere else now!!

Steve, what would a sound like 'missing a gear' in all gears and neutral - you know that metal grating sound - suggest to you, it's ok when you stamp on the clutch. I heard a clunk when changing down now this...
Just want to know what to expect when I drop the engine out - clutch?

Yep but expect a biggish bill as I suspect you have no lining left and/or the release bearing has siezed and is using the fingers as a bearing. I would get sorted PDQ. Change everything including the bearing and release arm. Tower View did mine a month or so ago after a seal contaiminated the clutch by dropping the gearbox.

Steve, just had a new clutch fitted to the 500, apparently reason for failure was a seal that had gone & leaked something all over the clutch. This seal was replaced too, otherwise new clutch would last months. Question - how does one check this seal to stop it ruining another clutch after x years ..?

Ed

It is behind the flywheel and there is no way of checking it without removing the gearbox and clutch. So you can either

1. Get paranoid about it and worry, and maybe take it apart every few months on the offchance.
2. Ignore it and just watch for any tell tale of oil...

No 2 is what I do.

Not an uncommon problem, my mate's TR8 had the same problem. Started as a judder as you released the clutch.

Tell me about the judders - it got comical until 500's eventual clutch change. Used to take the longer way home to avoid a steep inclined filter to get over the Thames. People pointed once!
