intake manifold sensors, 39 vs 4.6 sump?
Discussion
Hi guys I have two questions, firstly, my new ported manifold has a pipe in the bottom of the intake (for preheating air I guess) While the TVR intake has just a sensor of some kind. Do I need the sensor or can I just block off the whole pipe?

Second question: Since Im building a 4.6 engine, I wanted to use alot from the old 3.9 on it, like the front cover and the sump. Does the 3.9 (400) sump accomodate the larger throw of the 4.6 crank?

That sender is for the coolant temp to dash guage. You could use the LR temp sender which is located next to the ECU temp sender on the top of the intake manifold (plenum intake side). If you go this route, you're better to use a calibrated guage as the standard TVR guage isn't calibrated to the LR sender. You could however calibrate the dash guage by using a Spyida device to give you an accurate reading at all temps ( https://www.spiyda.com/magento/index.php). There is a common mod, which is to use an inline resistor from the LR sender, however, it is known only to be accurate at one temperature and apparently under reads above that said point.
I'm far from an expert, but my understanding is that the sump on all RV8 TVR's are the same, apart from the few that have bespoke baffled sumps. The sump from a standard LR would be too deep. I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks! I'll try heating the manifold and wrenching out the pipe. If that doesn't work i'll weld on a treaded piece to take the senderOleVix said:

TBH, it is known as a pretty poor location for a temp sender as it spends most of its time semi-submerged, therefore it isn't particularly accurate. It may be worth considering sorting something in the same position as the LR sender, as this is in a better location, plus will give you a similar guage reading as the ECU sender.http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...
I did this mod years ago when my brass connector snapped and its been fine since. Unfortunately I am nowhere near my car for the next few weeks but someone else will come up with the value for the inline resistor.

I think you'll save yourself a lot of wasted time if you examine your 2 manifolds VERY CAREFULLY.
Looks like you have a preserp & a serp manifold, that have completely different coolant paths & connections. There are lots of minor variations from LR which TVR used as they came bundled with the engines.

On the tvr theres a bottom sender where the pipe is but also two on top. One is the temp for ECU but the other small round one??

The 500 sump has circular indentations pressed into it in the front higher section to clear the big ends as they swing around.
Sorry about the crap photoe, just held the camera under the car and shot.

Theres a baffle plate inside the sump, so this indentation makes no difference to the crank counter-balance.Sorry about the crap photoe, just held the camera under the car and shot.
Drill in the centre, and you will probably find the gallery. I saw one like that where it seems like if they had just milled another mm the gallery would have been broached into. You'd still need to drill & tap the bolt holes though.
Otherwise you will be forced to use the P38 front cover, sump & oil pickup, with all the drawbacks / extra expense (for timing stuff of JE...) that entails AFIKS.
