Thats money for old rope ,make a number up and sell it .

A lot of them won't be able to use it. The one rule about plates is that you can't make a car 'appear' newer than it is. So, only cars registered after Sept 2000 will able to receive it.

Still, might go cheap enough?!

Always thought that the current registration system is complete w**k !
With all the ANPR technology you should be able to bid for any registration - that would make millions
for the Treasury and get rid of these ridiculous 'adjusted' registrations you see as currently.

A friend of mine in Virginia, USA paid the state admin charge ($75 I think ?) for any combination of 6 or 7 characters he wanted as long as nobody else had it. He went for ALB10N being a football fan.

Very few countries have registration numbers that identify the year of issue but the UK has had this system since 1963. I expect it was to satisfy the manufacturers at the time (persuading buyers to have the 'new' model) because although the old system of 3 numbers and 3 letters had almost run its course, they could have chosen a random system much like other European countries.

The system we have now has been quite a moneyspinner for the DVLA, and hence the govt. Bizarrely, some registration companies adertise plates for sale that are cheaper to buy direct from DVLA since the transfer fee is already paid. Although it's £80 (plus £25 if it needs to be retained), to be fair, this charge hasn't changed for over 20 years. Shhhhh.
