Door speakers

Can anyone give me a direct link to the correct size door speakers ? Mine are a bit large ans have started to bite in to the arm rests .

I believe the correct size is 6 inch, which limits your choice somewhat, 6.5 inch is more popular these days and will greatly improve the choices available to you.

Budget/Quality is the other consideration

The problem is the use of metric 'equivalents.' 6.5 inches = 16.5cm, but some sellers advertise 17cm as 6.5 inches and they will be too big for the door aperture.

16cm is about the biggest you can go without modifying the door panel or having them stick out. Well, on my car anyway!

The Focals are to large . So i`m after 6" 160mm

I have just installed a set of those JLs. Big improvement over the original pioneers and a nice fit.

Has anyone experimented with an mdf spacer just to bring the speaker out a touch enough to fit the grills?
Id always try to go for components if i could, maybe utilising the ashtrays in some way to fix the tweeters to.

The grills fit fine, I only took them off as someone wanted to see the tweeter in the past :-)

No need for spacers with these they are a straight swap (on my car anyway)

I thought you needed more of a base speaker for the rear .I get confused ,1 way 2 way 3 ways ,what does all that mean ?

Ive always found the best sound quality comes from decent components up front and a sub of some kind elsewhere. Never felt the need for rear speakers and it can sometimes sound harsh with the same set at the rear.

x-way refers to the number of different 'speakers' within a single speaker, for example a 6x9 3-way speaker will have a 6"x9" 'sub' speaker, then mounted on a pole through the middle a smaller 'mid' speaker and a tweeter.

This is the simplest form of speaker system, the next step up would involve crossovers and seperate speakers for each range of music, the advantage with this is you can put the tweeters in a lot better position, ideally they want to be at top of dash height at least.

Then we get into seperate base speakers, enclosers, amps, active crossovers, which is a whole forum on it's own!
If I could actually rear the stereo in mine, a sensible upgrade route would be a 4 channel amp running 2-way front component speakers and a single 8" sub in the centre of the rear bulk head.

Thanks for your advice ,i`m not to bothered about fancy stuff , i just wanted to remove the damaged rear 6x9
" speakers . How may ways are best for the rear ? I would like to fit smaller speakers to the rear but the holes are to large .

If it were my car id either blank the holes off and re carpet for a discrete sub box sonmewhere or fit a pair of amp driven 6 inch subs, this would involve knocking up an mdf blank to cover the existing holes but thats not hard.
Nothing wrong with a quality set of 6x9's though if you do choose to go that route again, but the difference in quality between your average halfords specials and something from jl audio is night and day.

So its JL`s front and rear ,that`s going to cost ! Would a small amp running the 6x9`s be a good idea ?

Depends how good your head unit is but it is advisable to amp them to get the best out of them. I have used them in the past though without amping and they have been fine, testing them in the car is the only way to tell.
