Cost for a diff overhaul?

Over the last year or so my diff has been 'singing' or 'whirring', and it's gradually getting more pronounced to the point where it's starting to be a bit annoying. It's not at all a worrying noise, just typical diff noise - I assume from wear as I approach 80,000 miles. It used to be most noticeable at about 40 mph, but it now starts (very quietly) from walking pace. Mine is a 99 450 with the BTR diff.

It's going to Str8Six for a service soon, so should I be asking for a diff overhaul? What sort of cost am I looking at?

Without digging my receipt out I believe I paid roughly £180 for a rebuild on mine, which mainly consisted of bearing replacement,that would obviously be more if the Diff was still fitted to the car, as mine was already removed and dropped off at a specialist gearbox guy local to me.

Not sure what you'll pay for diff removal & refitting?

Perhaps £500 labour, plus another £450 for the refurb???

I am completely guessing here but I doubt you'll get much change out of £1000 after V.A.T.

They cant really tell the damage before they open the casting and have a look inside. When mine went to John at redmans over 2 year ago it cost me £500 total, but my diff was not making any realistic noises like yours, I thought it was a precaution whilst it was out of the chassis whilst getting refurbed, I know an expensive precaution but I didnt want it going back in and failing 12 months later.

Unless your getting a new crownwheel and pinion it wont be scary expensive (unless things inside are broken!). Ive just had diff on racer done with new c/w and pinion, all new bearings etc and got change out of 1k. C/w and pinion from memory wqs about 450inc vat. So Id budget around 500 labour and bearings etc.

Thanks chaps. I was expecting it to be around a grand, but maybe it'll be less if I'm lucky. I spoke to Jason a week or so ago, and he thought it was likely to be the hardening on the crown pinion having worn through. Stupidly forgot to ask him what the wallet damage would be though!

Jason did reassure me on one important point: I was worried whether it might suddenly grenade itself and lock up, sending me backwards into a ditch. But he says he's never known that to happen.

Check your wheel earrings before condemning the diff, I thought my diff wason it's way out last year, turned out to be a rear wheel bearing, I was convinced it was the diff!

You can buy a new diff for less than that .

I had to have a new Crown wheel and Pinion in mine cost £900 including vat.

I had a new BTR diff with powder coated GKN to BTR adapter brackets supplied and fitted for £900 I was the first to have it done .

Do you want to buy a 3.45 crown wheel and pinon ,only done 2000 miles .

Isnt that just a reconditioned diff Daz?? Mine looked the same when I got her back. My brackets are home made (one is standard other is modified) so that btr can fit. Price sounds right for a recon diff with all new bits inside though.

No they are fresh in from Malaysia .Must admit i don`t like the 3.45 gear ratio .I want change ether to 3.23 or 3.08
