Ignition light on

Noticed an odd thing today just before going out for the evening. Was locking the car up for the night and noticed the ignition lamp looked to be on even though no keys in the ignition. Did not have time to troubleshoot, but passenger door was not completely shut, so did close it properly and the lamp went out.

Is this normal? Do you see ignition lamp on in your car if passenger door still open? Disconnected the battery until I can check further tomorrow.

Faulty Diode pack in alternator causes this IIRC.

Done some searching in the forum and found some old threads regarding this and opinion seems to be split between the faulty diode pack or a sticky 70A relay, both of which seem intermittent and cured (temporarily) but doing something on the car to cause a little current draw and then it goes away.

Anyone know how to check for sure which it is, or is best bet to replace both alternator and relay?

A bit pricey for a "may fix it".

And no clue as to which relay....door relay? Opening and closing the door is what turned the lamp off.

Sticking a new rectifier on an alternator isn't the hardest job in the world, they're only a few quid..

Thanks for the links, did not know you could buy those pieces separately, makes the world of difference to the cost.

Anyone know which is the 75amp relay some have said sticks and causes the issue too? At those prices no problem in replacing both and saving the hassle of a flat battery.

Spent some time in the garage today but could not get the issue to happen again.
