Steering column removal

Finally found the play in my steering, and its coming from the column (I'm gueguessing the collapsible part)

Any hints on how to get it from the car?

Ok I have the column out, now I just can't see how to dismantle it to look for the source of the play. What a faff

I hope you are well and nice to see that you got your car back.

For your problem, are you sayings it's not the uj's but play within the inner to outer column?

Hi Yan,

Yes the play was in the actual column, I have only recently replaced both UJ's to try and get rid of the play but it did not work. I managed to single out the column by clamping a pair of mole grips on the column shaft (UJs removed) and wedging them against the body in the wheel arch, and i could still feel the play at the wheel so that was all that was left.


Once i got the column off the car could not feel the play. Then i noticed the spring loaded joint section and when compressing the column it splits the joint slightly and causes the play. Somehow i think the column must have been compressed whilst it was fitted, or the joint was not seating properly. Anyways today i refitted it and the play is gone! An easy but slightly confusing fix.

Anyone had this before?
