power steering 'hiss'

Blokes, I seem to be getting a 'hissing' sound from steering wheel [PAS], any ideas how to cure?

Sounds like air getting into the system. Maybe worth checking the hise connections. Any bubbles in the fluid?

Air cant enter the system if the res if full the pumps gravity fed except if as follows.... Mac check the strainer in the res is not chocked (often missed and over looked) by soaking with cellulose thinners/carb/brake cleaner etc then reverse blowing it out with an air line till the solvent runs clean out through the large filler opening also check for collapsed or internal de-lamination (dont ask me how I found that one out) feed hoses from res to pump followed by some nice new fluid Dexron 2/3 will work great. My car developed a whine after a run out one day and refused to believe the pump was failing turned out to be an hose failing that had created a nice tongue of rubber restricting flow

It can also happen if you have a fluid leak (perhaps the U bend?) and the fluid level has got low.

I can almost say for certain Mac would spot any leaks the moment they occurred internal seal leakage from one chamber to another within the pinion assy can also cause hiss but we wont go down that road ad that wont me Macs problem I am sure

I am sure he would too, not doubting that his garage floor is inspected regularly for the slightest stain
but we post comments on here for everyone who reads the thread. I have had a sound like that on my daily driver and it was low fluid level.

Simon is the straner in the reservoir its self or in one of the flow or return pipes?

Seeing a post from Daz makes me wonder if it could even be a plumbing error, and you've siliconed the turbo waste-gate into the power steering system?
