Another GoPro Test

So thought it about time to finally try out my new GoPro (Hero 4 Silver). Must admit its much better quality than I was expecting. Its only a quick basic video but with my internet speed it would take days to upload anything longer.

Still trying work out the best place for the mic. Its under the rear number plate in the vid but there is still too much 'static' noise from the foam head rubbing on the plate. Has anyone tried it in the boot ? Wondering if that would be better.

I'm desperately trying to think how to justify buying one of these. Does anyone have any plausible reasons why this is a "must have" that would work against the female mind?

The quality on that is great. I think it's the same a Phazed has got to show the time trial he did.

Looking and sounding really good Kris. I like the choice of mounting position very nice.

With regards to the mic mounting the best place I have found is clipped to the rear plate. I had the same issue as you where if you place it behind you get the sound of the mic rubbing on the number plate. The boot is not an ideal place as I have found is it pics up the sound of the fuel pump.

You can just about see it in this photo where it is clipped so the foam does not rub.

I didn't use an external mic on my clip, ('cause I haven't one!).

I would like to use a suction mount on the inside of the windscreen but I don't think that they allow them during TDs?

Most lapel mics come with a clip to clip onto shirts etc, this is what I use to clip to the plate.

You are correct TD operators do not allow you to use suction cup mounts. You can sometimes get away with it however.

I was thinking about using one of the adhesive mounts you can clip the camera in and out of either on the outside of the windscreen matched up to where the rear view mirror is or inside behind the rear view mirror.

A small piece of blue-tac holds the mic very well to the number plate. No rubbing, no interference. Job done.

I have been wanting to get an external mic for ours, but unsure what to get, I have found a quality condenser mic and gopro adapter for less than £15, but am I better spending a bit more for a far greater reward or are the cheaper ones sufficient?

I after trying a number of different options I settled for the Audio Technical ATR-3350. It is a powered mic which helps capture the high dB of the exhaust and comes with a clip and from memory a 3m lead. I think i paid around £20 for mine. If you have a later GoPro you will need the USB to 3.5mm convertor. If you have a GoPro 2 it will plug straight in.

I found the cheaper ones went out of range with my exhaust and also picked up a lot of static noise. Maybe try the cheaper one and see what it is like on your car, if no good then try a slightly more expensive one.
