Took yesterday afternoon off as holiday for a zoom to Scarborough in the glorious sun
Started her up, no problems, left it for a minute or so as usual and then popped it in reverse and pulled to the top of the drive at idle. Dropped the roof and prepared to set off.
However as soon as I touched the throttle I got a strange sound
from the enginey bits (technical huh?)Kind of like a squealingish something needs oiling sort or sound. I know its difficult to diagnose without hearing but has anyone had anything similar? Its the sort of sound broken old sierra's and nova etc. make
I turned it off and left it for 1/2 an hour as some of my previous faults have miraculously gone away before now.
On restarting is made the sound again as the engine turned over when first springing to life and then was fine at idle but did it again under load.
I'm think possibly drive belt or one of the pulleys needs oiling. Is white spray non fling grease still the stuff for this on this car? Also how many belts and pulleys etc. should I find (1993 Griff 500 pre serpentine).
What else could it be ?? I've got this little voice in my head going "they all do it sir", "engine out job" etc. Please put my mind at ease

Yep sound like a plange sprocket has gone awol and taken the grunge adapter with it. Trouble is they don't make them anymore so it will be a new diff...
Alternatively sounds like a noisy fan belt.
Changing it for a new one may cure it. Oiling things is not a good idea as friction is needed for the belt to work. Could be a pulley slightly out of alignment. Got it on the Griff 500. Had it for over a year now. Keep meaning to do something but never got round to it.

I'm used to "normal 4 cylinder engines" one side of engine inlet otoher side exhaust manifold. Big scary V8 looks like 2 lots of exhaust manifolds.
Suitably confused now.
Also anything worth a tighten in the plenum chamber area, in case its air getting in, whilst I'm at it?

yep a manifold either side which are known to go but i wouldnt recommend tightening the nuts or trying to loosen them yourselve as the are likely to be very hard to shift.
If it is the manifold get a mechanic to try the nuts then if he shears the bolts off in the manifold he is responsible.

On a V engine (V6, V8, V12, etc), the 'outside' of the engine is flanked with the two exhaust manifolds. The inlet manifold is located in the V between the banks under the plenum chamber. Is this what you wanted to know?
I think the bolts that were being referred to were the allen bolts visible on top of the plenum chamber as air can leak in if they are not suitably tight.

Haven't looked yet I'm being a bit of a wuss
Hopefully have a play with it tonight. It's not been zoomy weather for the last few days mostly rain, thunder, rain, fog and rain. Did I mention the rain by the way ???
I'll post back if it fixes it. The more I think about it though the more I'm thinking air leak type of noise rather than fan belt.
I've had a big service at a specialist within the last 200 miles so I guess they'd normally change the belt.
They were servicing, fixing faults and poor running and getting me back on track to cover for a 3 year, 5,000 mile servicing gap (ouch!!).
I'll let you know how I get on tonight with the noise.

I'm sooooo embarassed.
I had a look tonight after work.
Fan belt feels a tad loose but nothing out of the ordinary and the bolts on the plenum seem tight.
So I started to check the plug leads no idea why but hey why not
One had fell off the distributer cap and was resting on the drive wheel for the fan belt hence the noise I suppose.
Only problem now is it seems a bit greasy on the connection and keeps coming off. Any ideas ??
Also can I have done any harm potentially driving the car like this ? (I suspect not but best to check I suppose)

Don't worry, I had that in a company Sapphire. Shortly after a service, I noticed a slight chuffing sound from the engine which rapidly got louder and louder until I thought it was going to blow up. I trundled gingerly into the nearest filling station and checked the oil, thinking it was about to seize, then discovered a plug lead - with plug still in it - completely detached. Lucky there weren't any petrol fumes under the bonnet - ka-boom.
Just had it started up and running.

I'd noticed on the previous journey that it was running cr@p hence cutting it short and heading for home. So I only did around 3 miles at low speed with the lead off which is lucky for me.
Major problem is I don't know how a V8 should sound
When I bought the car it was in need of a service and had a ticking which was described by the specialist who serviced it as leaking manifold gaskets. However they didn't get replaced whilst he was servicing it (don't know why) so its had a tapping noise all the time I've had it
I'll probably get it looked at during the week or at least give the specialist a ring. He didn't see the noise as a cause for concern so thats good at least.
However its becoming annoying now as its difficult to here for other problems at idle. I can't here the ticking under load.
