Stepper motor cleaning

Morning,
I've just suffered my first cold/damp idle problem in my 4.0 yesterday, after having left her in the station car park all day I came back and the idle from cold was only about 6-800 rpm and the first inch or so of throttle had no effect, almost cutting the car out. Also it feels a bit lumpy driving at below 2k rpm even when warm.
Having searched the forums the Stepper motor is coming out Saturday to be cleaned but what do I clean it with? Is WD40 a good start or do I need something a little more potent?
Also, do I need to disconnect the ECU for a while afterwards?
If this fails what else could I try to cure the problem?

It's all covered comprehensively in the bible, however, in case you have yet to purchase a copy:
I Cleaned the stepper motor and housing with a piece of kitchen roll dipped in white spirit. Careful when screwing the stepper back in as it is easy to damage the thread and render it useless.

Have just done this!!!
It is possible to do this with wipers and grill in place but it is easier to remove!
Clean with white spirit and the hole it came out of!!
DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN WHEN PUTTING PACK IN!!! I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH!!!! Why......60£ to landranger services cos i sheared it!!
Finger tighten then 1/16 of a turn or the tinyiest tweak with the spenner so it wont come undone with fingers!
What REALLY got me though was it turned out not to be the main problem! I replaced all 8 plugs and it stil was rough, then my cousin noticed the vacuum advance was hanging off the side of the distributor! Nice AA man who knew his Range Rover V8's fixed it in no time...Now it is truly rapid!

Have just found a step by step guide by TVRCCWales so will attempt on Saturday, hopefully my copy of the bible will also have arrived by then.
Had a quick look at the FAQs and will also change the Coolant temp sensor at the same time, for the sake of only £13 quid its worth a go.
