Gearbox Woes :(

Well my first major issue with my Chimaera....and it is a problem with the gearbox.

I was driving it over the weekend, and when shifting down from 4th to 3rd, the gear level went much further then before to engage 3rd. This now seems to be the case for all gears, to the point where the lever is making contact with the center console when in gear.

All the gears seems to engage, once you have found them that is, but this is getting more and more difficult to do.

Has anyone else had a similar issue? I'm hoping the box doesn't need a rebuild

Sounds more like a linkage problem to me.

^That, providing you have a t5 box. Take the centre console off and have a look in the hole to see if anything is loose, just pray that it's not the bit close to the bellhousing or you're going to spend a couple hours swearing with your arms elbow deep

Unfortunately I have an early one, which I believe has the Rover SD1 gearbox. I've had the console off, and the gear leaver goes straight down into the box with no external linkage.

There is an external linkage on the Rover box just different from the T5.

Difficult to say if it will be the problem or not.

Mine does the same and i cant even get 5th gear now...im looking at replacing the gearbox tbh

Hi Andy, not sure if you have sorted this problem yet. Had that problem when I first got the car- fitted and new gearbox pivot ball and circlip I think (check the receipts) which sorted it. Failing that it'll be the retainer that holds the two linkage 'rods' down. Should be further forward (from sitting in the car) on the top of the gearbox. Gearbox was recently rebuilt so shouldn't be that.

Thanks for the response, the issue turned out to be a bush in the linkage that had flat out disappeared! Had to take the box out to get to it, but it's all sorted now!

Good man! Cheap fix in terms of parts but hopefully not of too much cost to you! Saw your PH TV feature by the way

Yeah not too expensive considering. Thankful my friend rums a local mechanics.
