I have an Optimate battery charger.

Is it safe to charge the battery through the cigarette lighter socket? Does anyone use this method?

I use an ordinary charger through the lighter socket. It is connected directly to the battery. Its probably the easiest and safest way to charge.

I have an Optimate hooked up to my lighter socket all the time the car is sitting in the garage - yes it is safe, they even sell a ligher socket adapter.

I have an Optimax 3 that's linked directly to the battery. The connector tucks behind the carpet when not in use.

What are the the benefits / drawbacks of plugging it into the ciggie lighter rather than direct ?

I have a Draper Battery-Mate (£20 from Halfords) which I kept connected all the time my Wedge was in the garage, which was a lot longer than on the road (due to weather, time, work, holidays etc..). This has two crocodile clips which I now clip onto the alternator positive and earth stud on my Chim then route the lead out of the rear of the closed bonnet and to the unit. I have a covercraft dust cover with door zips which allow this when covered up. Anybody else use these terminals?
