My weekly check of the expansion pot etc has revealed a small number of brown spots which i assume to be oil. What is this, the car is due to see David Batty soon.

Thanks in advance

If it is oil (check the dipstick and oil filler cap for signs of oil/wtaer emulsion or mayo with that added zest of hydrocarbon) then either head gasket, cracked heads, cracked block. Don't drive the car because if it is just the heads you may get away with not warping them. Warped heads need replacing - again not cheap.

Just gone through this with the GRiff./

Steve thank you very much.

I have checked the dipstick and filler cap and cannot see any 'white stuff'. Next job?

Next question- you always mention the 520- what is this? Apologies for my ignorance- I assume a race car.

Nuff said, but in no uncertain terms am I calling you a big bore!!

BTW, Steve, in what order would I make a 520 from a 400, Plenum trumpets etc then gas heads, BV/short engine??? or just go the whole hog and get a 500 and tweak that?
Doin' me clutch has given me ideas for the winter, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought!!

You can't get to the 520 spec from a 400 or really a 500 for that matter as the whole engine was custom built for me by John Eales. Best off selling the current engine and going for brand new. I supplied the spec we went from there. The engine was just under £11K though and the triple throttle and other bits was around another 1k and then several K from then on. Then there was the £500 on fuel pumps, another 2 grand for bits and pieces not excluding all the suspension and brake work and and...

The details and piccies are on www.t-v-r-services.co.uk including the 520 story (just uploaded) of what we did to the beast. It was not cheap but it just had to be done.

The 520 is a road legal 390SE that has been modified slightly with a 5.2 litre competition spec engine, traction control and lots of other bits and pieces. Does around 2-3 MPG on full throttle but does spout 3 feet of flame on the overrun... 0-100 is around 8 seconds. It will be at Duxford sporting a purple colour scheme...

Forgot to say I would check the oil and water levels religiously. It may be that the problem if there is one is in its infancy. If one goes down as the other goes up you have a problem. It may be it is in a very early stage. If the car is going to be looked at, treat it carefully and get them to have a look see.

As for thr 520 see previous answers...

One it was more bare GRP resin beige and two, I was told it was going to be purple...

wasn't totally sure at first but it has made the car a little bit more subtle... NOT
