The 2,000 RPM Rattle...

Hi All

A couple of weeks ago, my car started to make a rattling/buzzing sound at around 2,000 RPM, which was coming from somewhere in the interior.

I did a search on PH and it seems that lots of people have had this, but there doesn't seem to be any consensus on where it comes from or how to fix it (although I stand to be corrected).

Having had a passenger in the car today, who was willing to put an ear to all parts of the dash/interior while I was driving, I'm pretty certain that the noise comes from the Gearknob (not only can I hear it coming from there, I can feel it too).

Question is then , any ideas on how to fix it?

If the gear knob has been changed at somepoint the collar that may sit under the knob may have come loose and rattles. Happened to me on my S3.

or it could something loose in the Transmission Tunnel thats making a noise thats coming through the Handbrake hole

If of any use....I had anoying noise which after hours of pressing bits of the interior, turned out to be a loose exhaust clamp vibrating away and comming up through gearbox area. Doh!

My dealer kerridges said it was caused by bearing on top of gearbox. fixed it but after about one year buzz has returned so next servise hopefully fix again

The problem is that the internal damping that the bananas and sawdust gave, that were introduced to quieten the noisy gearbox prior to selling the car to you, has now all but disappeared.

You need to put some more banana in the gearbox!
(allegedly an old car dealers solution)

I have this annoying issues as well. It would seem when I hold the gear knob in place with light pressure is stops. I have taken off the gear knob and used plumbers tape in the thread but it has not relieved the issue.

There is a threaded collar under the gear knob that tightens against it (twist gear knob and collar in opposing directions). This may sort it. Otherwise it could be soemthing in the gear shift linkage beneath that has come loose, that would require the tunnel trim to be removed and then investigated.

i had what i would describe as a rattle in the gear stick area, removed the centre console and the noise was gone, put it back on and the noise was back. finally found that by sticking my fingers down into the folds of the leather gator around the gear stick the noise would stop. i lubricated the gator with armer all and the noise has gone and not returned yet. that was a few months and a lot of miles ago. still can't believe how rattle like it sounded. i think it was only there in 5th when the leather is most bunched up by the gear stick? anyway easy enough to try and nothing lost if it doesn't do anything. good luck.

I have had this too. the solution which has fixed it for about 5 years is to put a dob of mastic in the gearknob and screw it back on. Dulfords (probably Colin at TVRSSW) done it for me and it hasn't returned.

If you see how the T5 gearstick is located and linked to the box, it is surprising there are not more of these rattles and buzzes complained of - the shifter sort of floats in a spherical nylon bearing, and is supported only by the linkage cross-bolt and its associated plastic bush and thrust washers. loads of scope for resonances to set things tingling after a bit of wear and tear even without loose knobs. For all that it is surprisingly effective as a shift linkage, it is a truly horrible design

Nz fan. I went out this weekend and checked out what u said about the gator maybe being the issue and it would seem that it might be !! I will continue to investigate and report back.
