Monday mornings!!!

Anyway, hope you all had a good weekend.

I'd like to canvass some opinion. The battery is a gonna (no arguments there). Wanted to make sure so got the brother-in-law to jump start, and yes car works when battery charged. Will be replacing the battery next weekend (which looks like it'll be a fun job!). Anyway, when the car starts the red oil warning light at the bottom of the dash remains on (you know, the "please turn your car off and contact the main dealer" light ). The thing is, the oil pressure on the gauge is reading is at just over 30 (which is fine). Simon (the extremely helpful guy at Leven) seems to think this is a sensor issue (haven't had the time to check this properly), but was curious as to whether this has happened to anyone else here.

Well in the assumption that you've checked there IS actually oil in the engine ..then it could well be the sender.

Yes, there's plenty of oil in the engine.

Just wanted to check as I'd hate to ruin the engine having had the car only a week.

Try the sender... and of not, then get someone to look at it.

..I reckon the 30psi of oil pressure gives a clue to the presence of oil

Err, red light is normally ignition charge light. are you sure you have no battery / oil problems - but your car is not charging? Check alternator fuse / output as a start. I would take odds that if you pull the spade connector of the back of the alternator your red light will go out.

Isn't that the red light at the top of the dash? According to the handbook the red light at the bottom is the oil warning light

got a new battery on order!

Don't s'pose they changed the light arrangement it for the later models (mines an early 1994)? .... the book defintely says its the oil light (or is it a mistake in the book?

If it is the ignition charge light, why does the car work when it's being jumped? Excuse my ignorance.

Can someone who has a better brain than me, tell me what the next step should be?

Early 1994 oil light is yellow, as I said pull the spade terminal off the back of the alternator - if the light goes out its definitely the charge light. If so your alternater need fixing (early cars are unlikely to have the fuse on the chassis - but have a look - someone may have fitted it).

As usual if someone has had the dash out / replaced a LED it is simple enough to change the locations of the LED - I suggest you do the above just to make sure which light is coming on. However your symptoms suggest it is much more likely that you are not getting any charge.

Pity that handbooks are'nt electronic, they could the be updated when modifications/updates are made.

Check the fuse link. That can go and will bring on the charge light.

They are only about £1 to buy.

Matt.

Are there different sensors / senders for the oil pressure gauge and the oil pressure light then, or do they run off the same unit?

Light is connectedto an oil pressure switch, common across Land Rovers et al, which simply grounds the light which is powered by the ignition. Pressure sender is separate screwed into the adjacent boss on the oil pump base and variety depends upon the instrument gauge. Just as a note, ETB make a combined unit which I really want to try - so oil temp sensor can go in the vacant tapping.
